“Nice hotel but needs to do more to justify price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

Booked 2 rooms , double for my teenage daughter £330 a night and a suite for my wife and I £440 a night.
Come to oxford often and have stayed in all the decent hotels , Randolph, malmaison and the bank ( sister hotel to this one)
Oxford hotels are all expensive , just the way it is , but for this money you expect it all to be excellent.

What's good

Hotel itself has been excellently refurbished all very nice , including library and outdoor sitting area
Room furnishing really are top drawer
Staff friendly
Location
Parking available ( call to reserve as not many spaces)

What's not so good
For £440 a night for a suite , I expected a suite , not one room with a sitting area
No tea/ coffee making facilities , I think hotel feels it's too posh to provide a kettle , at least put in a coffee machine.
Only been open 2 months since refurb, and feels like it's not all bedded in yet
We were shown to wrong room , which had been made up with 3 beds and had to wait until they found our correct room.
Had to wait ages to check in as the 2 members of staff appeared to be learning how to check people in
At 10pm called to reception for some tea to be delivered ( no kettle remember ) after 2 attempts , gave up as no one answered the phone.

Despite the gripes , this is a nice hotel , but not worth the money yet..............

Room Tip: Book parking as very limited

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Old Parsonage. The central location is ideal for exploring the city centre and our room was very comfortable. It definitely has a boutique feel to it, and the soft sheets, plush pillows, enormous fluffy bath towels and Noble Isle bath products were a real treat.

My one complaint about the Old Parsonage is the price. I know it's Oxford and prices are high everywhere in the city centre, but honestly, I do not think the price we paid for our room was justified. Based on our experience there, I would have expected the room to be between £100-£140 cheaper than the rate we paid. A Saturday night stay there makes this the most expensive hotel room I have ever stayed in, beating five-star hotels I've visited in other European and Asian capitals which had far more amenities, much larger rooms, and even more central locations.

Other reviewers have mentioned the narrow, steep and winding staircases, which didn't bother us, but people with large bags, children's buggies or the elderly may find them challenging.

We also had dinner in the hotel's restaurant, which was top notch and definitely worth trying. Excellent service, high quality food and an intimate atmosphere.

This hotel is very pleasant and the staff are full of enthusiasm. They need to be to carry your bags up the very narrow winding staircases but as long as you allow them to take the strain that is no problem.
The location just to the north of the centre near to Somerville and Keble colleges is perfectly convenient to walk around Oxford. Breakfast is served when reasonably fine on the attractive walled terrace and there is also a quiet pretty courtyard inside and a very stylish 'Library' where drinks can be served with outdoor terrace on the first floor too.
Parking tight but quite a few places. Some shuffling.
Lovely. Different style from the Malmaison (see a previous review) but comparable very high standard of decor location and excellent staff.
Space is tight in Oxford overall so these hotels charge London prices but once you use this as your marker these are much nicer in terms of location and personal attention from the staff and altogether an extremely pleasant stay.
Room very tastefully decorated and comfortable.
Breakfast allowance included in our rate was generous and breakfast was very enjoyable.
Recommended.

We have stayed a number of times in Oxford and used several of the top ten venues and are now
in a position to give you an insight to what we now believe is the best.
The Old Parsonage has recently opened following a major refurbishment and with millions spent in all areas of the establishment and you get a feel directly upon parking that life here should be good.
There is quality to be seen in all areas of the hotel immediately upon arriving at reception and in short order we were shown to our "Conran" designed room with excellent "King" sized bed, smart TV, internet radio Mini-bar and safe and a well-proportioned bathroom including areas to place the ever expanding variety of pills and ointments necessary for life’s full enjoyment, oh and a wonderful walk in shower with plenty of Oomph!!
After a stroll around the nearby centre of town we returned to freshen up and enjoy a very pleasant dinner in the courtyard under the sunshades and served by pleasant and not too attentive staff.
The portions whilst not suiting an athlete training for the boat race were well sized and very tasty indeed.
We were not rushed during the meal, and nor were we suffered to wait. Clever!!
A very nice breakfast taken alfresco in the morning sun rounded off our stay and checkout was easy and without "surprises"
WE shall return.

This hotel is so cute, traditional yet contemporary and modern. The outdoor courtyard is very secluded and perfect for lunch, dinner or drinks.

All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful during our stay.

The rooms were lovely. We were lucky to have room 34 that looked over one of the city's churches. The bed was so comfy and the duvet and sheets were so soft.

The bathroom had some lovely linen robes and a nice big shower.

Honestly recommend the smoked almonds and salted caramel chocolates from the mini bar!

The hotel also has a qwerky library with and outdoor courtyard that was beautifully lit at night.

Even though we only stayed one night, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We were considering another hotel for our five night stay in Oxford but were urged to consider the OPH. Pre-refurbishing reviews did make us pause but are delighted that we chose to stay there. Location is ideal, near enough to walk to the centre of the city but removed from its busyness. Reception staff invariably friendly and helpful. Our room was across from the beautiful new library and roof patio and had its own small balcony overlooking a lovely grade with gazebo. Towels in the bathroom the plushest ever. Our room was immaculately clean but we did find housekeeping and dining room service inconsistent which, as another reviewer note, may be due to inexperience that could be overcome with time

My partner and I got married yesterday at Oxford Register Office and afterwards had a 4 course lunch for 14 people in a private room at the Old Parsonage (organized in advance). Starting with champagne on the terrace, the service was great, ambience lovely and the food & wine were excellent - all guests were thoroughly relaxed, comfortable, and enjoyed the meal. The room was nicely decorated and laid out exactly as requested, and our choices respected completely. There was no hurry or pressure, and we were delighted with the experience. Thanks!
