“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 16 June 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Old Bank Hotel for a couple of nights over New Year. The room was lovely, location is about a 5/10 min walk into town. The hotel has a lovely brasserie attached to it with a great atmosphere and also good for drinks after a meal. I would reccomend going to Jamies Italian (Jamie Oliver) for breakfast/dinner as the food is good and it is not overpriced.

Wonderful hotel. Friendly and extremely helpful staff: they really went out of their way to be helpful. The room was comfortable and beautifully decorated. The hotel is decorated with real artwork - not the usual synthetic hotel-art. It's centrally located in Oxford, within easy walking distance of everything. There's an excellent restaurant in the hotel, and a terrace cafe that serves terrific scones with clotted cream.

The location of the Old Bank, right in the heart of the city, can’t be beaten but this lovely hotel offers much more than that. Our room was at the front on the first floor with a view towards the University Church – I spent a happy time people-watching from one of our room’s two window seats. I can imagine there could be some traffic noise at night with windows open but we weren’t disturbed at all. The service from the staff was excellent, very helpful, friendly and attentive. We loved the free (unexpected) extras such as the offer of a guide to Oxford. We made good use of the free internet service, the free bikes and the tea and coffee in the room (never had a cafetiere in a hotel room before) and the quiet library. We also loved the style of the hotel with stunning (but accessible) modern art and sumptuous but understated decoration of the bedroom and bathroom – yes, our bath did fill in 2 minutes: we timed it. We ate lunch in the sunny, quiet courtyard – delicious! The waiting staff were happy to leave me reading my book for an hour in the sun after we’d finished our food - I felt like I was holidaying in Italy rather than spending a weekend away in the UK in April. Having parking was a great bonus – although we moved our car from under the trees after having it splattered on our first night’s stay. We did get a special deal when we booked – but I think we’d have enjoyed it just as much even if we’d paid more.

The Old Bank Hotel is a great place to stay when visiting Oxford. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the rooms comfy and nicely decked out - and the service is top notch. The owner also collects art and his superb collection is displayed throughout the hotel which makes a change to corporate-type 'artwork' usually hung on hotel walls. The hotel even provides a free walking tour of the city, which was just what we were looking for. Next door is their acclaimed restaurant Quod, which is a hip place with fresh dishes and affordable (higher end) lunch menues. The location couldn't be better, I had such a perfect stay. I don't usually call hotels wonderful, but it really was. I enjoyed every minute.
Some big pluses are: super comfy beds, ideal location, staff who are geniune about how nice a time you have, a quite reading room with a decent coffee machine, good restaurant next door and chic (but not snooty) atmosphere.

this was a mystery hotel which was very exciting and we were not disappointed.
5* room was out of this world it was like an apartment with a beautiful crescent bay window the only critisism was we had no tea or coffee facility in room but the big advantage was its position and car parking facility.

We stayed at the Old Bank Hotel (so named for the obvious reason) in early December and enjoyed the experience greatly. The staff was delightful and helpful at every turn. The rooms were expensive for our tastes but handsomely finished out, quiet (we asked for a room on the back), and comfortable. The hotel is ideally located on the High Street just across from the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, which itself stands in front of the Radcliffe Camera. We walked everywhere, except to Blenheim Palace, of course (but took a local double decker bus there for 5 pounds round trip--oops, "day return"). We found the onsite restaurant most attractive and its food and service quite good. The only slight concern might be for cautious solo travelers, given that the stairs to the upstairs rooms are just inside the front door, well before you reach the registration desk, and the employees often did not see us as we went up and down the stairs.

Another nice feature of the hotel's location is that if you take the clean and comfortable Oxford Express bus from Heathrow (a 90-minute ride with your luggage stowed underneath), you may alight about a block away from the Old Bank at the Queen's Lane stop. Buy a "period return" bus ticket at Heathrow for something like 23 pounds and you can return to London's Victoria Station or to Heathrow from the same stop. Very convenient and inexpensive.

If you are traveling during Oxford end-of-term, as we were, be sure to reserve your room well in advance. We were glad we did, as our hotel and the others in convenient locations were completely full with some parents arriving to fetch their students home and other parents arriving with students coming to interview for admission.

The location of the hotel was very good, all thoe finding the car park was very diffuculy, I'd advise using a GPS!
The food was good but breakfast was not included in the price.
The room was a good size and overlooked a well kept courtyard.
The hotel was well laid out and deserved being decribed as being botique.
Thumbs up all round!
