“Our daughters wedding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

My husband and I have just spent the last couple of days staying at the Hawkwell House Hotel, we had picked this hotel to hold and then celebrate the marriage of our daughter on the 14th June. I have been trying to think of the best way to tell you all what we thought and how the wedding was dealt with, and what the food was like, not just for the wedding but for general eating too, and all I can think of to say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! From beginning to end Gary Hall and his team went above and beyond for us. What you want for your daughters wedding is the perfect day, and Gary and his staff made this happen. I read reviews below about some language difficulties with the staff, I have to say we found none of this, they were friendly pleasant helpful, from the restaurant staff, as we had a pre wedding meal the evening before the wedding to the breakfast staff, to the staff that helped Gary with the monumental task of catering in everyway to our 65 day guests, and on into the evening when approximately another 120 evening guest descended on mass. I only agree with the water thing, I had told Gary about this and he explained to me about a problem they had been having which they were battling to sort out. My husband and I came away from the hotel this morning with the most happiest of emotions, and a big part of this feeling was because of the amazing way the Hawkwell and Gary planned, sorted and helped us all through an emotional very big day, one of the most important in any persons life, their wedding day. I know that our daughter and her new husband were blown away with everything that was done for them, as were we. I will end by saying the one thing we came away from the Hawkwell House Hotel with is the memory of the perfect day. Thank you Gary Hall, thank you to all of the staff.

The reception and bar were staffed by possibly new and undertrained staff which resulted in general chaos. However the rooms were very good with good views, and excellent facilities with plenty of space. The highlight of the stay was the food and the staff in the restaurant. They were attentive, and the food itself was spot on, with some unusual choices. The restaurant is really well done with big sky lights which make the place full of light. The prices were also very reasonable. Overall a very good stay.

The hotel situated in a quiet spot near Oxford was pleasant to the eye and apeared well appointed. It was clean and bright, in a pleasant setting. My husband and I were staying as part of a wedding party. There were about 10 rooms booked for our party. When we arrived the disabled parking spaces were blocked off by a large planter and when I asked if this could be removed, the reception staff were not helpful. Eventually (after some 15mins waiting) my son and I moved the planter so that my husband (who is an ampputee) could access the hotel. (I am 70). As we went to register we found that our confirmed disabled access room had been changed to an ordinary room and our room given to two other members of our party. Neither of these needed disabled access and they had particularly requested a twin bedded room. We did not know the other people and we had to find out who they were so that the hotel staff could change the booking back again. No explanation was given for the change. Our room was large with room to move about with the wheelchair and the bathroom had a wet room style of shower and looked very nice. However the handbasin was located very close to the WC and you could not square the wheelchair to the sink. We have a non- self propelling wheelchair which is very small. An ordinary wheelchair would have founf this very awkward. The room did not at first appear to have hot water but after three requests to reception and two men who came at separate times to check it out it was found that hot water could be accessed by turning the tap to its furthest point (Huge pressure - eerything got soaked) when the water was very hot and then turning it back to warm. There was not way this could be pre-set so we had to do this every time we used the handbasin. The shower was exactly the same. The showerhead could only be adjusted with the greated difficulty by me. There was no way a handicapped person could adjust it. The water came out scalding and at full pressure before adjusting it, and there was no way of setting it. My husband was very distressed and the water pulsed very fiercely hot and cold. The floor had non-slip tiles in the shower area but the rest of the bathroom had highly polished tiles which were lethal when wet and there was no way to keep them dry. The cord to call for help was at the opposite side of the room to the WC and the shower so was useless. This room was, in my opinion, not only unsuitable for a disabled person but was positively dangerous. All this happened as we were desperately trying to meet a deadline to get to the wedding. I did speak to the receptiomist the following day and asked for the managers name but had no feedback. the room was £139 per night and the facilities were terrible. Added to this were bar staff and waiting staff who, although pleasant, had poor english and were as slow ans the proverbial snail with the cramp. They couldn't cope with splitting a simple dinner bill into three rooms and when we asked for the fans to be turned on in the lounge on the Sunday morning it took nearly half an hour for someone to sort it. the best man had to vacate his room at 2.00 in the morning to allow the bride and groom to use it with all his belonging still in it. he had to hastily grab what things he could as he had to leave early ing the moring and was told to go to another romm by a night receptionist who haed an attitude problem and was surly in the extreme. This is not a hotel I would recommend and certainly not to a disabled person.

Room Tip: Only the main part of the hotel has a life. the two othr buidings have stairs.

There were some positive aspects to our stay, but they were unfortunately overshadowed and outweighed by the negatives.

We were there for two nights, at £129 per night, as part of a family stay for a wedding. So, let's have the positives first. Our room was well appointed, with a large bed and room to move around. The hotel is in a quiet area, and there was a pleasant view from the room. The cleaning staff were friendly.

Set against that was the attitude and customer service of the other staff members.

The waiting staff in the restaurant were incomprehensible, as apparently we were to them. They mistook "sparkling mineral water" as "beer"; when asked for a named ale which was available from the bar, they couldn't find it and brought "Duvel" instead. We were told that we couldn't have a particular drink, as it wasn't free of charge. It seemed beyond their understanding that we might be able and happy to pay for it, it just "couldn't be done".

On arrival my disabled father was told that his requested and confirmed disabled room had been changed. No explanation, but in order to change rooms we had to request another member of the party to change their room.

The alternative room was unsuitable for a disabled guest.

The Best Man was woken and told to vacate his room at 2 am to make way for the Bride and Groom - so their first night of wedded bliss was spent in a room with his old socks, in a bed he had been occupying until a few minutes earlier. He was directed with little more than a nod of the head toward his alternative room, rather begging the question of why the Bride and Groom could not have been given that room to start with.

At breakfast, we were brought our toast and tea. We waited a further 15 minutes for someone to take our main order - but no-one came. We upped sticks and left.

Staff were generally surly, uncommunicative and unsympathetic. This hotel costs more than the Crowne Plaza in Hong Kong, and is less alluring than the Premier Inn in Cardiff.

Thank you for your review. I would just to confirm, this was a group bedroom booking, the wedding was not held at Hawkwell House.

We are sorry to read that we failed to meet your expectations, customer feedback is very important to us. We take your comments on board regarding our customer service levels, we will be holding additional training sessions to improve this aspect of our business.

The issue with your fathers room was an error on our behalf, sorry for the inconvenience this caused. With regards to the best man incident, we have now put in place a new process to ensure that group bookings are handled more efficiently. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Stayed 6th & 7th June 2014. One of a block booking of approx 10 rooms for wedding party. Our room was a double, quite small, window would not stay open, decor tired, evidence of mildew in bathroom, other party members had appalling experiences - no hot water for 1 couple, who had booked disabled room but it had been given to other party members when they arrived, other couple with disabled room had a huge tub chair in the ay of the wheelchair when they arrived, I could go on at great length but primarily most of the staff whilst very 'nice' did not speak English as first language which caused numerous difficulties. Suffice to say I would not seek arepeat experience.

We stayed at the Hawkwell House Hotel on the Saturday night of a week-end in Oxford recently.
This is a large and attractive hotel spreading over quite a large site in the village of Iffley on the outskirts of Oxford. It is quiet and peaceful and within a few minutes walk of the Thames towpath at Iffley Lock, despite also being only a couple of minutes drive from the Oxford by-pass. It is an easy bus ride into town, so that you don’t need to brave Oxford’s parking restrictions or its fiendish one-way system. Our room was in an annexe to the main part of the hotel and although comfortable and clean was a bit cramped. The double bed was distinctly on the small side, and the wi-fi reception was very poor (although much better in the hallway outside the room!). Breakfast was very good, and the service efficient and friendly.
I suspect that many of the other rooms are more spacious, so it would be worth inquiring specifically about the type and size of room available at the time of booking, particularly at week-ends as the hotel seems to be a popular wedding reception venue. In all other respects this was a pleasant stay, and the location of the hotel is excellent.

Room Tip: The hotel has 2 annexes and rooms in the main building may be more spacious.

Hadn't been for 20 years, so it's changed a bit...for the better!
Very busy Saturday, surprised to see a Bride and Groom waiting in reception to go through to the lounge and their vows, but hey ho!
Car Park tight and steep, but accommodation, service, food etc. was very good. We were a large party (12, almost all over 60 years old) and were very well looked after.
Staff on reception deserve special praise.
Nice walk down the lane to Iffley Lock, and then along river towpath into Oxford.
