“A great introduction to Oxford”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

Do the tour at the start of your visit to Oxford as it acts as a great introduction. Later in the week, we went back and into the places we had seen on the tour. It was a nice balance of anecdote and history. It would have been awkward not to 'tip' the guy at the end but he did not bring any undue pressure to bearand fortunately he was well worth it. We, and most others in the group, gave £5 each.

“Best thing in Oxford!”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

This was the best part of our visit to Oxford! We went with a guy named Chris, and he knew loads about Oxford University and its long history. What was really nice about the tour, was that it wasn't boring and dry. Some of the other tour companies were trying to get people off the Footprints Tour and onto theirs, which I thought was really unprofessional. However, Chris just laughed this off and we moved on.

The tour goes all around the city centre, down to Christ Church (Harry Potter!) and back up to the top of the centre, during the tour we heard about loads of Oxford Colleges and the interesting and strange characters that attended them. At first I thought 2 hours was too long, but mixed with the humour and knowledge of the guide, this was perfect.

The tour is free, with voluntary tips if you have a good time. This was mentioned at the start, and that was it. After having such a great time, we had no problem leaving a generous tip!

I will definitely recommend this to my friends and family, who are visiting for the Olympics.

“Not good”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

Went on tour today based on trip advisor feedback. Was really excited to learn more about he town and the university, sadly this was not the outcome. The tour leader was a nice guy but did remind us several times that tips were his only form of payment... So the tour was not free at all. I do not know Oxford well but do know that we did not get around much of it. It rained a bit but the guide talked too much and most to be honest was unmemorable (he told us twice how his friend was a rower, showed us where his dad bought shoes and many 'stories' were based on heresay and were tales rather than fact or history) and somewhat long winded. Very little walking at all :-( I saw more on my 1 hour wanderings before the tour than on this tour. Go join some professional tour group and at least support professional guides. This was so disappointing.

“A tad boring walking tour of Oxford”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

I took the footprint walking tour of Oxford today. Unfortunately we didn't get to all the sights that were promised on the map this may have been due to the weather (it rained for part of the tour) or due to the amount of talking the tour guide did. For a paid tour you would expect to see everything that was promised in the brochure however when it is "free" you take what you get and certainly would never complain. It was disappointing not getting to Christ Church and Alice's Shop, we did this ourselves after the tour finished. The walk only covered about two blocks. Some of the stories the tour guide told were very interesting, others were unfortunately on the boring side. I'm still no further informed at the size of the various colleges, which school covers which discipline, etc I will just have to do some research and discover this on my own. Having done walking tours in many cities around the world I wouldn't recommend this particular tour it is something you could do yourself as it didn't cover very much ground. It is builded as a free tour, it isn't you simply pay what you think it is worth, and I did pay.

“Footprints Tours”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

Having decided to visit Oxford at short notice and with no idea what to look at or where to go, we stumbled upon the Footprints Tours and their excellent guide, Tom, purely by accident. Encouraged by Tom to join the free tour, we saw many of the major sights of Oxford in just under 2 hours and learnt a lot about the city's history from Tom's lively and extremely entertaining guide (think a younger Michael McIntrye, which is a good thing!). Coming across the tour and Tom purely by accident was the highlight of our trip to Oxford. The tourguides work purely on tips and Tom really earnt his money with his endless enthusiasm, knowledge and humour.
We're planning a return trip later in the year with our kids and will definitely be booking onto the tour in advance this time.
