As a Friend of the Ashmolean Museum and frequent visitor I cannot rate it highly enough. There is so much to see in the newly redesigned museum that it is worth choosing your galleries carefully beforehand using the website and access to the digitised collections. Well worth a visit are the special exhibitions including the Master Drawings on show now with works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Hockney and many more. Friday evenings the museum usually hosts a themed event and like the British Museum is becoming increasingly family friendly with workshops and talks for ages. Pick up a 'Whats On' monthly guide at the Friends desk on the right as you go in. There is an excellent shop, lockers to leave your small bags, a cafe and a roof top restaurant which is quite expensive and variable but with views over the city of Oxford. The museum is closed on Mondays and is free entry.

The Ashmo has recently undergone a major renovation which makes it a fantastic backdrop to a wide range of art and artefacts. There is a fantastic new atrium, a smart restaurant on the top floor and a cafe down below. The restaurant is pricey but well located, stylish and with a good outdoor area overlooking the Randolph. I have to say that we found the service very poor when it first opened but I guess there would be teething problems.
There are a good range of artefacts, beautifully curated ranging from Ancient Egypt mummies to Japanese pieces. The art galleries provide an example of most eras with a few famous pieces such as the Utrillo, the Bonnards, Pissarros and Pre Raphealites. I love the Dutch still life room, although some of the best bits are too high to see properly.
The staff used to be rather stuffy but are now very welcoming and you can arrange to attend talks on specific topics if you are around for some time.
In all an absolute must when visiting Oxford.

The Ashmolean is a gem,well presented and a joy to visit. It often has specific attractions and a place to visit on more than one occasion. We are lucky to have such a prestigeous museum on our doorstep

An excellent easily accessible user friendly museum. Great cafe and book/gift store at basement level, some exhibitions are charged for but otherwise 90% free, and you can make a hassle free donation. Think of any period of art/archaeoloy you are interested in and you can usually find some example - I recommend the Chinese department, wonderful.
