“Gardens in Spring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

Spring bulb season is the best time to visit - wander around the stunning and surprisingly secluded walled gardens taking in the colourful view. You pass through Canterbury Quad to reach the garden - once deemed by a national paper to be quietest urban location in the UK.

“Beautiful gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2013

We spent an hour or so looking around the college and then visited the gardens. The lawns of course are immaculate but the plantings and trees were truly magnificent. Absolutely worthwhile going in for a visit.

“Best for students, but not much to see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

If you're a student applying to Oxford, I strongly advise you to check out St John's as in a vast array of ways (location and large endowment being two of the most obvious). Prospective students are welcome to visit at any time (though come on an Open Day and you'll get to meet lots of friendly current students).

But for tourists, the college is open from 1pm to 5pm daily. The gardens are unusually large. However only three quads are open to the public (and like most colleges you can't go inside, with the exception of the chapel). Canterbury Quadrangle in particular is worth seeing. But in general, for tourists, SJC doesn't have much over any other colleges (though entry is free). During university termtime, visitors are invited to Evensong in the chapel on Wednesday and Sunday at 6pm.

“A beautiful college”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2012

A really lovely college, with a beautiful chapel and dining hall. Definitely worth looking around as long as you don't disturb the students!
