“ideal location for the city”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

Having stayed here before, I knew the location. We had booked to see a show in Oxford and thought it to be convenient.
We had a Bar meal which was better than we expected, although the drinks in the bar were a bit expensive.
Our rooms were fine but were a long way from reception with confusing signs.
Would advise getting a room near reception.

Booked for one night in December 2013. The location is great, within walking distance to the city centre or there's a regular bus service if the weather is inclement or anybody with walking difficulties. Car parking was no problem, plenty of spaces on the night we were there.
On checking in the staff were very friendly & helpful.
Our room was on the first floor & had a nice view of the front garden, although the hotel is on a main road into Oxford city centre it's set far back in its own grounds so there were no noise issues at all, this was handy as we needed the window open!
The temperature in the room was too hot & not easily adjustable on the radiators, so we opened the window.
The room was average-not really good enough at this price level. The bed was a standard size double-even budget hotels like Premier Inn etc. have bigger beds. The room was reasonably clean but the decor was tired/old. Small TV-very basic channels available only, furniture & carpet needed replacing. Bathroom was very basic but had nice toiletries & the shower was nice & hot.
No air conditioning at all, this should be standard at this price level. The free WiFi simply did not work at all-we have several devices using different Internet service providers and none of them worked at all-our visit was for pleasure but if I was on a business trip this would have been intolerable!
Breakfast was average, carpet was dirty, one member of staff could barely speak English at all.
In summary it's an average hotel but with a little work could be much better, this is my first visit to a Four Pillars chain, I travel extensively with my work (every week) & would need to be convinced that things had improved before I booked again.

We arrived early and so accepted that the room (we had a Chic upgrade room) was not ready. We were told 45 mins, though details were taken and booked in to save time later. We decided to have a coffee and a sandwich in the lounge area. Here we had to queue for 10 mins and then order taken by bar staff who had to put order through a computerised till. This was the hold up and not a great first impression, standing in a queue as others placed order also. Very long winded when there are waiting- staff who serve you food when you are seated? Sandwich good, latte not good- strong, watery and expensive- definitely not the real thing!

After 45 mins we went back to reception to be told by a different receptionist (who smiled less than the first one) that our room would be another 45 mins or we could take another one which was ready. So we took this and made our way to the room at the back of the hotel. The room was large with good views but was not quite sure why it was a Chic room as all the extras were nowhere to be seen. Trekked back to reception and asked what room it was and was told Chic by a very dour young man, but stated as we didn't wait for the original, the extras weren't there. So why tell us another room was ready and available? Our second frustration!
Eventually the extras arrived with a friendly, apologetic young man. The dressing gowns however were damp but we just put them in the small bathroom (not that chic) to dry. Did not complain about this as felt I might be sounding picky by now but again frustrating!
Spa area was very good as was the gym.
Breakfast was fine and smoked haddock and poached eggs particularly good. However the service caused more frustrations... this is classified as a 4 star hotel and the service should reflect that. The staff were busy so it was some time before orders were taken. Then, when we went up to the buffet we saw our table being cleared! I pointed out we hadn't finished to which the waitress who had stacked our cups on her tray started putting them back saying she didn't know which belonged to who so just randomly placed half empty cups in the wrong place whilst telling a waiter off in front of us. I asked if we could have clean cups which didn't go down too well. The second morning we had to wait at least 10 mins to be served and this was only by trying to follow a waitress around the room and place the order. Staff were busy but it was more the fact that most didn't seem very accommodating and therefore customer service seemed to be lacking with things rather chaotic. Further training might be a good idea?
Overall the food was good, hotel clean, surrounding grounds really lovely and a bus stop outside with a regular bus service to the centre, 5 mins away. However it lacked character and Christmas cheer both decoration wise and staff wise. Personally, I felt it was expensive with the upgrade and for what you got and this coupled with the frustrations mentioned above, felt it was not value for money and lacked what a 4 star should provide.

Room Tip: Chic upgrades I believe are bigger than standard rooms and good views but are a long way from recept...

Good position and very helpful staff.
We booked an accessible room which was quite a long way from reception particularly with a wheelchair!
Not a roll-in shower but we were told of this when we booked. The room was spacious and overlooking the down to the river.
A fridge would have been been useful. A lovely short break to visit granddaughter at University.

Room Tip: Try to get one near to reception.

Warm welcome from check-in staff for my one night stay. VERY long walk to my room as the hotel is much bigger than you think. Frustrating that I got all the way there only to find my key did not work - had to go all the way back, complete with case. But the restaurant staff at dinner and breakfast were friendly, even though the food was average (but priced accordingly, so no real gripe there). The room and bathroom were large and extremely clean with a lovely view of fields. Very quiet. A ten minute bus ride directly into the heart of the city, costing £1 each way, saved a £17 full day car park charge. Would certainly stay again.

Room Tip: Call ahead if you want to ensure you don't have a massively long walk to your room!

We stayed overnight at the end of October. Check in was quick and efficient and the room was very clean and comfortable. We stayed in the main building and this was not noisy. The gym was small but perfectly adequate for a quick early morning workout. We didn't sample the restaurant as we were in Oxford for a dinner event, and then met up with friends the following morning for breakfast. A lovely stroll into the city and ample parking. I will definitely stay here again.
