“oxford spires”

Its a pretty hotel, and a popular one. Lots of parties and conferences held here and its always buzzing with people. Its a big hotel and so thats not a bad thing. The rooma and bathrooms are big and comfortable. They are designed in old fashion, but thats the charm of the city and comes through in the hotel too. The view from the rooms is great. Good food available at the restaurant, for all times of the day. The recration facilities are great, good gym, nice heated pool, and good activity lounge area. The location is good. It is a little far from the oxford city center, maybe a 20 minute walk, but buses and taxis are easily available. Service and staff is great.

We stayed here in order to attend for a hospital appointment. The dinner B&B offer was reasonable for myself, husband and son. The rooms and meals were lovely. Staff were very helpful and polite. We would certainly book again,

This Hotel has clearly shown more life in the past... and has the potential to be great again - hence the title of my review.

Much about the Spires is dated and tired. Worn / thread bare carpets in corridors and rooms; Old style chintzy decor guest rooms, complete with easy chairs of the kind you find in a care home! Lumpy mattresses, thin duvets, worn but clean linen. Bathrooms with the inevitable mould in the crevices - though efforts are clearly made to clean it but sometimes the only remedy is refurb and start again.

A prevailing annoyance for me as a business traveller is the lack of FREE internet access. Spires is no different and charges stupid rates for something that should be a minimum basic provision. There are some good hotels in the UK that provide free access and it really can be the deciding factor when choosing a hotel on business trips.

Rarely do I sleep well in a hotel but despite the lumpy bed, I had a very welcome, good nights sleep. The room overlooked a garden and beyond, a paddock complete with ponies - maybe this tranquility helped my slumber.

On a high note, the staff were pleasant, polite and helpful. Checkin and checkout was fuss free and efficient. I also used the leisure facilities and whilst the pool is a bit on the small side and shallow (1.2m), it was pleasantly warm and most enjoyable.

I couldn't really recommend this hotel without caveats but could easily do so if it received a little updating. The potential is there...

This Hotel should be so much better than it is. It is in a good location close to Oxford but the rooms are really shabby. The bathrooms in particular were old and tired .

Stayed here for one Saturday night in mid November to visit our daughter at Uni. Room was clean & pleasant on the ground floor (room 12). We spent the afternoon in the bar catching up, good attentive staff throughout. We got chatting to Clare, events manager. She changed our restaurant booking after we'd made a mistake (the Indian restaurant had changed to Mediterranean); recommended an alternative(4500 Miles From Delhi); rang & booked and insisted on the discount voucher; booked the taxi £6 for 4 people & we had one of the best indian meals we've ever had for £20 per head (following 20% discount!!) The hotel is to be praised for the quality of this staff member. My husband had a swim in the lovely pool first thing Sunday followed by a great buffet breakfast, and we were able to walk into Oxford & leave the car at the hotel free of charge. We will definately stay here again.

Stayed 4 nights after getting a good deal for a Connoisseur room, breakfast included, with Expedia. The room was large with a sofa, balcony, queen bed, tv, tea and coffee, fridge, in-room safe, iron, etc. Bathroom very clean and nicely decorated. The hotel is well set back from the road so no traffic noise. There is a 150 yard walk to the back of the hotel to the Isis and you can walk into Oxford (about 1/2 mile) by the river, past lots of boat houses and students rowing. The dining room was very pleasant and breakfast was excellent with lots of choice and service was good. Ate in for two evenings - food was very good but a bit pricey. You can also have a more casual menu in the bar area. Used the pool twice which was good though the jacuzzi wasn't working and sauna was small. It's very convenient for the city and the bus stops just outside the hotel. I would also recommend the open top bus tour which I thought was excellent. Also convenient for a trip to Blenheim which is only 7-8 miles away. A very enjoyable stay and I would certainly stay here again.
