“what a shame”
Reviewed 27 February 2009

We stayed here with a couple of friends for 1 night (friends birthday). When we arrived we had to haul our bags upstairs that were very very steep. The rooms were not very clean & my friends room had no hot water. When she complained the next morning, the man on reception said. 'well it's a good job I've got a plumber coming then'. She was not offered any money back or an apology. The other thing is that we were told the bottles in the bar were for display only, but they could serve us a bottle of wine. I was quite annoyed about this as we had asked specifically about the bar when we booked. The rooms were £105 each + £10 each per car

I wasn't too happy with my stay in this overpriced rather scruffy hotel. I was charged £75/night for one person and was annoyed to see on their website that they offer a 5% discount on this for a 2-night stay. This was not mentioned to me when I checked the price before booking earlier in the week. Breakfast is terrible - stale toast, mouldy bowl of prunes and everything in packets. The staircase is dangerous. The bathroom mediocre. Is this the penalty for staying in central Oxford.

We read the reviews before booking. It seemed that people were either very enthusiastic or very negative about this hotel, which was a bit off-putting. However, after two nights we can report that our experience was overall very good.

Of course, it's a 17th century hotel. So there is a gap under the door because the walls are not quite straight, our bathroom was tiny and the staircase is narrow. The stairs and the floor above creak. Parking is inconvenient. If you don't like all that you'd be better going to a modern hotel.

But we like 17th century hotels and very much enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable, cosy, clean and warm. The staff were very helpful (we were allowed to inspect a couple of rooms before making our choice). The free internet worked. The continental breakfast was good and included in the price. The breakfast room itself is tastefully decorated. A particular plus was the ideally central position just around the corner from the Sheldonian.

We paid 94 GBP/night for a Monday and Tuesday in November, not exactly cheap but – hey - this is Oxford! (The reviewer who suggested the Old Bank as an alternative did not mention that this would be nearly twice as expensive.) We experienced no noise problems coming from the historic Turf Tavern next door.

Maybe the proprietors have learned from the earlier negative comments. Anyway, we had absolutely no complaints and would happily come again.

Very good location but completely overpriced. It is priced as a hotel but is like a big B&B.

£130 per room is crazy!!

Also breakfast was shocking! Cereal buffet and toast only - you had to pay for hot food! Very cheap food - plastic cheese in small plastic packets and laughing cow triangles is not what we expexted for the price at all!

Stay at the much more impressive Old Bank Hotel nearby for a proper weekend away. And the resturant there is well advised too!

We found the hotel to charming and quirky, retaining a lot of the historical character. The sataff were friendly and the breakfast good. There was no beating the central location. You really felt that you were in the heart of the city.

However, I felt that our bathroom could have done with some attention. There was mildew on the celing, the wooden toilet seat was badly damaged and there was an unpleasant smell. Due to the uneven floor, which is to be expected in a buiding of this age, the bed sloped quite badly and this affected our sleep. All rooms were advertised as having a flat screen t.v, but ours did not have one and the reception was not very good.

We found that the pub next door did not cause too much of a problem and they were closed by midnight.

I did feel that it was a bit pricey, but I would return as the location was excellent.

My parents and I stayed at the Bath Place for two nights: 19 and 20 August 2008. On the plus side:
Good central location. Olde Worlde charm - my parents’ room was quirky. My room was light, airy and the bed comfortable. Nice light breakfast. The staff were helpful. And Hamish was adorable!
Secure parking.

Downsides: the step flights of stairs to my room on top of that were not ideal. Particularly when we arrived. It was pouring with rain, and carrying luggage , the car park wasn’t near enough. But it was an old building, so there wasn’t really space to put it by the hotel. My parents had a shower in their room. I had the bath, but a room swap wasn’t possible, because of the stairs. The lack of a wardrobe was also a downside. And I also found the late night noise from the pub irritating. Wasn’t easy get a good night’s sleep.

Yet, on the whole, the Bath Place's character and location made up for any grumbles.

We found the Bath Place Hotel to be a friendly, family-run hotel in the heart of Oxford, and tucked in amongst the colleges as it is, it's literally only a minute or two's walk away from all the city's major sights. We were impressed by the way that the owners have obviously gone to some trouble to retain as many of the 17th century building's original features as possible, with the result that you really feel surrounded by history. Our room was clean, cosy, comfortable, and welcoming and the breakfasts were excellent, with a really wide choice available, from croissants and continental to the full English. If you want to soak up the genuine atmosphere of old Oxford, then forget large impersonal hotels and corporate welcomes, and go to the Bath Place Hotel. You'll love it!
