“Historic small hotel in great position in Oxford”
Reviewed 2 June 2010

I recently stayed one night in Bath Hotel while visiting relatives in Oxford. The Hotel is very old and quaint being down a tiny cobbled alley within walking distance of all the sights of Oxford. The staff are extremely pleasant and helpful and the twin room we stayed in nicely furnished although quite cramped. But.... the hotel is several hundred years old! Our only complaint was that the shower was broken and looked as if it had been for quite some time. Certainly water came out of the shower head but it was more like a tap being turned on than a shower and impossible to direct anywhere, it meant dancing around under the water flow but for one night not a big deal. We did report this to front desk and were assured it would be repaired promptly - check it out if you are staying in room 5. Breakfast was plentiful and what is probably known as European Continental - meats and cheese as well as cereals and juices. Eggs available as an extra. Tea not quite hot enough for English tastes though. But all in all for the money this is a reasonable place to stay in the centre of Oxford and you are certainly made welcome.

This hotel is situated in the heart of student Oxford, a big plus. It consists of a series of converted eighteenth century cottages so the rooms are not large. There is a nice lounge and dining room. But the thermoses for coffee and hot water were often tepid and one had to wait too long. The hotel is 2 star and heavily overpriced at that rating, with rooms at £110 pernight. The "double" room I had was so small that one of the sleepers had to crawl over the other to get out of bed. The worst thing is the room cleaning. The room was dirty when we arrived and was visited once during our 4 night stay. The carpet was dirty and old, the quilt was shabby and 30 cm too short. The management seemed to have no control over the cleaners. The staff seemed to be students, not professionals. The proprietor was absent and has been incommunicado ever since. Letters are not answered. Yet this is an AA hotel, clearly not properly vetted. It exploit its excellent location without putting anything back into it. I can't speak for the other rooms but for us it was a nasty surprise.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Bath - it was lovely. Oxford isn't easy to get around with a car and we had trouble finding the Bath Place but once we did we had no complaints. Our room was on the ground floor, just off reception. It was clean and comfortable. The bathroom looked brand new and was very well appointed and spotless, with plenty of complimentary toiletries. The staff were all very friendly, the breakfast just enough although not extravagant if you're looking for a huge buffet.
We would certainly stay at the Bath Place again, (although I wonder how the rooms would be cooled in the middle of summer?!)

Unfriendly welcome. Continental breakfast only included - cooked breakfast can be purchased but at additional expense. The rooms themselves were somewhat dated and didn't really constitute value for money. The hotel parking is a short walk away but at £10 per day expensive.

Well - reading some of the very poor reviews all I can say is that either people have much higher standards than me or I was just lucky with the room I had!! I was up at the top, overlooking the Turf Tavern (and the bell tower of New College) bang next to the ancient city wall. The room was nicely decorated, fundamentally clean, and cosy and warm, and the bed was comfy. Very steep steps to get up the last flight and I had to ask a younger staff member to carry my case up, but that was part of the charm.( It was once, long ago, lodgings for the elite of Oxford students, lithe young men who would have had no trouble with them!) - The place is steeped in history and it's almost tangible. I half expected a benign ghostly visitation in the night! Parking available up the road in a yard behing old wooden gates with big bolts - again, history all around you! The breakfast room was charming and breakfast absolutely fine. Great location too.

My only criticism/suggestion to owners would be that it IS a little bit overpriced. If a cooked breakfast had been included it would have felt less so. But I shall be back!!

Our family of two adults & two teenagers stayed here for two nights in April. The tourist centre booked us here after arriving late afternoon in Oxford. Oxford was very busy due to the Easter Holidays so we had little to choose from. Firstly, the room was overpriced at £150/night, also the room was very poorly furnished and not clean enough for my liking. We had problems with the shower. The position is perfect as it is right in the centre of Oxford and the little hotel next door is very cute. However I would not recommend to stay here.

Have returned from a 2 night stay. Staff were friendly and helpful, The building is tucked away next to a busy pub so if you are looking for early/quiet nights be warned! however even on Saturday night last orders were at 11 and things settled down quickly. We stayed in room 1 over reception;which was very clean, as was the bathroom. The shower didn't work but I guess the plumbing is centuries old. Breakfast was O.K. plentiful and well presented and the dining room staff were friendly. I would definitely return to this hotel as the location is fantastic and the building with all the history connected with it makes for a very special stay. If you want perfection go to the Randolph if you want character stay at Bath Place.
