“Much better than expected”
Reviewed 16 November 2011

Having stayed in Holiday Inn Express in the past in the UK and other countries my expectations were very low. So I was quite surprised at this one out in Oxford. The location is OK if you have a car but there is not much nearby worth doing.

The room was a good size for three people. The fold-out sofa bed was large and comfortable but the double bed was far too small for 2 adults.

The room was quiet thanks to the location. The choice of food at breakfast was very impressive for this standard of hotel. The car park was a bit small and it was hard to find a space on Saturday night which was busier.

Staff were not very helpful and the 5GBP charge for 1hr of internet is extremely expensive.

Room Tip: No particular suggestions

My friend and I chose this hotel for a weekend in Oxford, because city centre hotels there are so expensive. Hotel website implied there was more around the hotel than there was. It really is quite out of the way. The hotel has arranged a fixed fee with a taxi company of £10 per trip into the centre of Oxford and that can certainly add up over a weekend.

The hotel is very clean. Rooms ok, fairly basic. Furnishings looked newish just quite dated in their design. We had a twin room. No bath just shower. Definitely take your own hair dryer.

Place seemed popular with groups - hen and stag parties. So very loud late at night/early morning when they returned drunk.

Breakfast was help yourself buffet, make your own toast/tea/coffee etc. It was perfectly adequate and although not masses to choose from, there was lots of what was on offer. Again good basic and value for money.

Fine as an average place to stay as a base to go elsewhere. Although if only intending to visit Oxford as we were, a city centre hotel would probably be easier.

Dear guest

Thank you for your posting. The hotel is six miles from the centre and we have the fixed charge agreement with the taxis. There is also a nearby park & Ride and we also have a bus timetable at reception for our guests.
I am sorry if our web site apppeared to imply that there are more facilities near the hotel than is the case. The Ozone Leisure buiding just 5 minutes walk from the hotel houses the following:
three restaurants Aziz Express (Indian-10 % disc for hotel guests), Oxy (Chinese- 10% disc for hotel guests), Frankie & Benney's (Am/Italian); a bowling alley, multi screen cinema, leisure club (special price for hotel guests) and I Kidz children's activity centre. Also the Kings Arms Pub at Sandford Lock just 1 1/2 miles from the hotel offers a 10% discount off food for hotel guests

We stayed here last year, and we had a good stay here. It was in a great location with a cinema, bowling alley and many restaurants nearby, and also supermarkets and other shops not far away in a car. The stadium is also next to it.
We had a good stay in our room, good size, good bathroom, good facilities (kettle, hairdryer, desk, lamps, television). The breakfast was reasonable, there wasn't really a lot. Would expect more of a cooked breakfast, but the other things were okay. Great service, although wifi was very expensive, and didnt work properly, would think wifi would be cheaper or free!
The parking was free which was good, and we had a good stay on the bottom floor. Would recommend!

Having just watched the trip advisor programme on Channel 4 tonight and seen the damage these reviews can do I remembered that I promised to write a review for this hotel following a visit by myself, my friend and her cousin in July this year. We needed a 3 bed room and this seemed the best value. It certainly was!! We were greeted by friendly staff who not only booked us a taxi to take us to the centre of Oxford but gave us a bus map to get back! They did the same the next morning after a very good breakfast ( including cooked food) which we ate in the dining area. There was also a seating area and a bar so for us this was much better than a travel inn where there are no public spaces. We would certainly repeat the experience. Thank you for a very easy stay! psVery clever bathroom!

I have stayed here every Friday for the past 3 weeks after previously trying the premier inn and travel lodge in Oxford. This is by for the best hotel out of all 3. The rooms are very clean, beds could maybe be a little firmer but everything else is very good. The showers in the premier inn were terrible! here they are powerful and hot even late in the evening. The only downside for me is the cost of wifi £5 for an hour or £9.99 for 24 hours, unfortunately my 3 wifi dongle didn't get much reception here.

Breakfast is a bit hectic but its included in the price where as premier inn charge you £7.95 per person on top. have to say the coffee machine does make a very nice latte!

Lots of free car parking, never had a problem finding a space... on the night i stayed at the travel lodge i returned after work at 2am and was lucky find one free parking space.

Will be staying here more often.

Enjoyable weekend in Oxford in October 2011 with unseasonable warm weather.

Hotel and rooms were clean and though the rooms were small they were adequate for a couple of nights stay. We spent the days sightseeing and the evenings out for a meal. Generally the staff were very helpful. The breakfast buffet is good, much better than I expected after reading some comments from other visitors, even had soya milk for my cereal! Can I suggest bananas as a fruit choice and Earl Grey tea bags being available.

There was some confusion about the actual cost. When booking on the internet at the Holiday Inn site we were promised a 20% reduction for booking 21 days in advance and paying up front. It appears we only received the 7 day advance booking reduction. I queried the cost for my room at reception on booking in and was told very politely I had received the full reduced cost. My sister in law queried it also earlier with another member of staff - the man on reception she implied couldn't count and there was not 21 days between the day booked (30th Sept) and booking in to the hotel on the 21st October. I wonder if the manager can clarify this. Note I was charged £145 for 2 nights in a twin room on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd. Otherwise I would recommend the hotel.

On the Saturday we went to the Karma Indian restaurant on the Oxford Rd - I would recommend it, a meal for 5 was under £80 including a tip. A taxi costs about £6.50 to £7, or catch the no 1 or 5 bus into Oxford. A day saver ticket cost £3.90 and can be used for multiple journeys in the same day. Bus is a 5 minute walk through a park and onto a council estate. It was safe during the day but more ominous in the dark.

Dear Mrs Maire S
Thank you for your posting. I am pleased to read that you had an enjoyable week end and that the staff were helpful.
I am sorry that there appears to be some confusion regarding the internet booking site. The booking site shows the Book Early & Save which is bookable 21 days in advance and also Advance Purchase Booking which is available 7 days in advance. These rates can change and are subject to terms & conditions & availability. If a rate or dates are not available the booking sites will not accept the bookings
When a booking is made through an internet site the booking rate is shown and a confirmation would be issued. This rate once booked is the confirmed rate.
Kind regards
