Quite a walk from town center though.
Too many stairs to the building and rooms. Too many group bookings creating noise, occupying toilets and common lounge seats with kids that scream, giggle and fool around in their rooms at night.
Very expensive inflated price on the weekends. That's because they're always full, thus never a good night's rest, because your room is always filled and there's a guy who snored so loudly even earplugs didn't help. They seemed to be popular with groups that booked up all the rooms, so they have no problems raising the price high, nor are the callous staff too caring/concern with the guests. I tried to stay 3 nights and was only able to get 2 at highly inflated price.
And to top it off, it's the only YHA where I had my food stolen and the staff didn't seem at all concern nor caring.

Room Tip: There are none as the dorms are always filled and with loud snorers often. Even the single, double b...

Many thanks for your comments.
YHA is a charity with an objective for as many young people as possible to stay in our hostels, enjoy a trip away from home and enrich their lives.
As such, we're proud that we're popular with young groups and we're sorry that, on this occasion, this spoilt your own enjoyment of the hostel.
We aim to price competitively within Oxford and offer the best rates for all our guests, regardless of whether or not we have groups staying with us. Whilst you've had beds at the higher end of the price scale on a weekend in July, you'll find that we have lots of great deals and special offers available throughout the year.

Overall, this was a good hostel. BUT there were a few things that caught me off guard which probably wouldn't have upset me as much if I had been made aware of them. The thing I had to remind myself was: this is a very cheap price for the location.

* No free wifi; the wifi you pay for is not available in the rooms
* They do not rent locks; you have to buy them
* For towels, they charge you 7 pounds up front and you only get 5 pounds back if you return your towel with your receipt.
* You cannot check in your room until 2:00 pm and the room that they store your luggage in is basically available to anyone. Nothing got stolen; but it was still unnerving.
* I had booked to stay in this hostel back in April (I stayed in June). But they still made me switch rooms after two nights (I was staying three nights total).
* The light in our bathroom broke and could not get fixed right away so we had to use the toilet in the pitch dark and use one of the communal showers on another room.

But, I will say the people staying at the hostel were all very friendly; the staff was pretty friendly (aside from some French girls); the place was clean and I always felt safe. It is also a PERFECT location (right behind the train station and walking distance to the colleges).

Having read the reviews I was prepared for the worst but was pleasantly surprised. The staff were very pleasant and efficient and the public areas - lounge, library and reception - clean and welcoming. Our room for four overlooked Oxford and was adequate for our needs. Bed linen was clean and fresh and there was storage for our bags. The shower cubicle was tiny so water tended to spray on the floor and it was soon awash. As the night was very warm we left the windows open and were kept awake by the mobile kebab van's customers on the road outside. We had two sets of windows that would have kept noise out if closed but it was our choice to keep them open. The hostel itself was quiet even though it was full. The breakfast was exceptional value for money - full english with fruit juice, tea, coffee, cereals, toast, fruit, ham and cheese. The scrambled eggs were delicious. It's a 5 minute walk to the centre of town and the railway station is literally next door so location is very good. Considering how cheap the room was it is good value for money but don't expect any luxury!

Room Tip: We had a dual aspect corner room that was light and sunny. It was on the second floor - no lift.

Having travelled to Oxford with a whole group of students, this was an ideal place to stay the night. The rooms were big enough for everybody, the bathroom was clean and there were enough "spare toilets" ;)
Breakfast ther is delicious. You can enjoy a typical English breakfast, which will stuff you. You'll be good to go 'till 4 PM.
Negative points: quite noisy due to the train station being right behind it.

When we arrive at the hotel, the lobby is not big enough to accommodate me with 51 person... The receptionist is nice and really help.. but the policy of the room key is quite annoying.. we have to pay 5 pound if losing the key.... the bedroom so so... the bed itself so so.... the breakfast average ... the best thing of this YHA is the location ....

We had the worst nights sleep we've ever had here. We were woken up early in the morning by the partying, loud rows, racial chanting and constant banging by the group of men in the next room. After a couple of hours we gave up, packed our bags and left.
The walls are paper thin. There is only one member of staff on at night so I don't suppose they can stop anyone coming in. We did complain but the staff didn't look surprised so I wonder if this is a regular occurrence.
Never again.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else it's pot luck who's next door to you.
