“nice looking hotel but food very patchy, overpriced generally”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2010

Been to Cotswold Lodge for Christmas break, and it was generally good, but not worth the 2-night package price of near 500 - a reasonably good value would've been 350 with CHristmas lunch max. Liked the room - but then it was a deluxe one in the old part, though as it was top floor, only a couple of skylights with no view - that said the hotel has creaking floors and thin-ish walls so better that than noise from rooms above - we still heard next door neighbours to some exttent but not bad. THe size was good, especially of the bathroom - very large for an old hotel, but it was also under-heated with ine very small radiator. THe room itself had good heating and nice canopied bed but lots of beams which might not be fo revery one, especially tall people! It's important with this place to get the right room, as been said in other reviews, The modern extension looks charmless with low ceilings - theough we didn't see modern rooms inside. THe old part is charming as is the whole old building, but you either get som etraffic noise and bnig windows (at the front of old hotel) OR quiet but tiny windows at the back - maybe ther are a couple of room that have both. Lounge and Bar are nice with big windows and well decorated but real fires not on regularly which makes them cold - when they are on it's really nice but they economise on logs mosr of the day. The restaurants doesn't deliver what it promises on the website! They seem to be trying hard but not succeeding - this is NOT a gourmet place as they describe it. THe food is very plain and no presentation whatsoever - breakfast so-so with overcooked bacon. It's all ok but just not there, no flair in the kitchen. The desserts are the best thing they make, nearly very good. Bar sandwiches are generous and quite good, but again nothing special. No comparison to the food and tea at Old parsonage down the road - i would stay in Cotswold but eat at Parsonage though food there is expensive but at least memorable - but it's not cheap at C.Lodge as such! Service is generally very good from the manager and concierge lady (though she had to check things on internet rather than knowing it all about oxford) - but the attitude was good). The receptionists are hit and miss - one lady was very good if not especially 'sweet', but the younger girl was a quite abrupt sometimes and with a bit of wrong attitude - still overall service was good. In th erestaurants all staff is from Lithuania it seems - they are keen to please but lack polish and are a bit artificial in their manner. Finally the location is good - away from crowds but about 15 min into the centre.

Booked a standard room and were put in the new extension. Arrived at 3pm on a cold day to an unheated room. Reception said that could not have heating on until 6 as it was on a timer ! yes really ! Room service bought us an electric heater but the bathroom was still cold and we had an early evening appointment in the city so had to endure it anyway. Bed fine etc but at 6 am the next morning we were woken up by a couple who seemed to be talking in the bathroom - in fact they were in the room behind / below us but we could hear every word ! Unbelievably bad soundproofing. In all fairness we got moved / upgraded to a much grander and better room on the first floor in the old part of the hotel. If you want to stay here (and it is great for city access on foot) then pay for a premium room. Otherwise go somewhere else.
Staff are fantastic and know what service is. Restaurant is rather soulless having had one of those mistaken 90s makeovers - all wood floors and trendy lighting but a bit cheap with it. Food was fine, both breakfast and dinner.

Stayed 2 nights in room 71 on the first floor. Checked-in smoothly. The room is small (like NYC hotels) but well-organized. The first day wi-fi internet worked in the room, after that it went dead. But it worked in the hotel lobby. Heard people from upstairs a lot - but they were quiet. Used portable electric heater throughout my stay. Breakfast was fine. TV was working with many channels.

Rooms comfortable and clean. Food simple but very tasty. Highlight is the helpfulness of the staff and the service. When I was in great distress with sciatica and couldn't walk far, they did everything to help me and my son through it. Thanks to Walter and his staff.

Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in although the location was excellent (short walk to centre of town), the bed comfortable, and it was a pleastantly looking hotel. The car park was small though we didn't have an issue finding a space.

The TV worked fine although other people in the hotel complained they didn't get any BBC channels. We had no issues receiving those channels in our room

No running water during the first day. We were told to wait 20 minutes because other people were having showers. After 90 minutes we were told the boiler was broken. We did get showers the second day but it was luke warm at best and only a small drizzle coming out of the shower head

We waited over 75 minutes to get served for breakfast the first morning. We didn't get what we ordered and it was cold. We were told there was no black pudding left but people who ordered after us were able to get it! The second day we didn't wait long for breakfast and the food was warmer but we still didn't get what we ordered.

We spoke to several other lodgers and all had similar complaints. We were told the coffee was not drinkable (though we didn't have any ourselves)

Cotswold lodge offers a well priced and very comfortable stay in a town full of overpriced rooms. The room while small, was cosy, with comfortable beds and good quality tv and facilities. Cheerful friendly service was the tone throughout my stay. The breakfasts were delicious and the restaurant good value for money, particularly the house champagne at £30.
Some undercooked chips for a room service meal were the only flaw during a three night stay. The hotel is slightly out of town, but a fifteen minute walk from the centre of the town, and easily affordable by taxi (five pounds max). However, just round the corner from St. Hughs college, so perfect for my needs, and a short stroll from the restaurants and cafes of Jericho.

As the reviews I read in Tripadvisor about this hotel were not great, I was reluctant to stay there. I travelled with my daughter and we had a nice surprise. Dinner and breakfast were very good, staff very friendly and the room small but very comfortable. Really good value. I think we got a lot for the amount of money we paid. I would recommend it for sure.
