First time punting and had a very enjoyable time. Received some good, clear instruction at the boathouse as we set off and we had a great time. Would recommend anyone to try it. This section of the Cherwell is, apparently, good for first timers as the river is wide and shallow (couldn't reach the bottom at a couple of points though).

Went to Cherwell Boathouse yesterday (Saturday 26th June) as a group of 8, hiring two punts. The punts were generally clean as were the cushions lent. Once you have hired the punts it is self service to collect the items required (pole, paddle, and 4 cushions) but then you are left to set off as you please in either direction on the river. We headed downstream, although this caused a few issues with Dragon Schools rowing races occurring on the river as part of their sports day - so would suggest heading upstream if there are events going on at the school. Punting can be hard but is a good laugh when you go with friends. Be aware that parking is not easy, There are a few parking spaces by the boathouse but other local parking is restricted, some is permit holders only and the rest is limited to 3 hours (be careful on weekdays as there are other restrictions as it is by a school.) The boat charges are average for the area, on weekends £18 per hour or £90 for the day per punt. We went out on 2 boats for 2 hours and it cost us £63, meaning there had to be a discount added (not sure whether due to multiple boats or multiple hours) that had not been advertised but a pleasant surprise. There is a bar available for you to purchase drinks that you can take with you (we had pimms). At the moment the loos are portaloos but it looks like they are in the process of building a new toilet block for the use of the boathouse users. All in all a great fun afternoon.

It was plain punting from an established boathouse. Punts are not pristine and the service a little gruff - didn't move from his seat while we sorted out 3 punts ourselves. But it was fine, no frills and all OK.
Pricing is high (its Oxford!) and should get cheaper each hour but does not.

The boathouse is a bit far-off the centre of Oxford and it takes a while to get there.
Once there, the boathouse complex is pretty disappointing (maybe the restaurant is worth the visit but we didn't try it).
The really good thing about this attraction is the walk from the centre of Oxford to the boathouse by the river and the university gardens! The walk is a great glimpse of college sports life and a nice way to escape the beaten track attractions of oxford.

Even though I had the hardest time getting used to "punting", it was actually quite fun for our family of 5. The Cherwell Boathouse is a charming little place with what looks to be a cozy restaurant overlooking the banks of the river. While we didn't eat there, we did get some snacks and a few drinks (Pimms!) after punting enjoying a lovely summer day on the river. My teenage son was much better at punting and went out with his sister for another turn down the river and back. I have to admit that I was not keen to do this activity at first but am very glad we did it.
