Sofia checked us in and was very helpful and friendly. Room was very good. Spotlessly clean and spacious. Bathroom had everything we needed. A visit to an "original cell" is a must at this hotel. James, who parks cars, helps with luggage should be the P.R, man at the hotel. So knowledgeable and again very very helpful. It was very hot the days we were there (24th and 25th July) and needed the quiet air conditioning in the room.
We left our car in the car park outside one day and just walked around the town, canals and colleges. Just so much to do in Oxford.
We booked through hotels.com and I think we paid over the odds.

Room Tip: The room we had overlooking the "exercise yard" was very good

My husband and I have just returned from a stay at Malmaison for oyr 1st wedding anniversary. When we (eventually) got there we were welcomed with friendly staff and check in was prompt. We had reserved a car park space so it wasn't a problem although I know it is restrictive. You're asked to leave your car keys at reception so they can move it to an underground car park-fine by me as I know the car was secure.
Room was lovely-boutique like. Quite small but had everything you need. It was nice having the cell windows although id hate to have been a prisoner there-rooms must have been tiny!
We ate at the hotel-food was delicious but expensive. Both of us ordered fillet steak which all be it was cooked to perfection but it should be for £30 each with no extras-all on top plus an 11% surcharge too.
We then had drinks at the living room which was lovely-try the passionate kiss cocktail, mmmm.
All in all we had a great stay and would definitely stay again. It's in a great central location with lots of shops near by, the service is good, the food is lovely and the hotel has a charm and elegance about it. Thanks Malmaison.

We went to stay here for one night as we had heard a lot about it and thought it was worth seeing for ourselves. We paid extra to get a room in the prison itself. the rooms were very quirky but nothing stand out other than the fact you are in a cell. the door and walls are quite thin so when people walked past we could hear them very loudly and so they could probably hear us as well. I got woken up at 2.30 in the morning by some people who probably weren't talking very loudly but the sound must have bounced around the lobby and so ended up being really loud. The bathroom is very small - For that sort of money I was expecting a large bath like you get at the Hotel du Vin chains. The Tv is tiny in the room and my biggest bugbear was no fresh milk in the fridge for Tea and coffee! when you are paying that much for a room surely that isn't too much to ask. Also annoying on the night we stayed the 3rd floor bar was closed for a private function so we didn't get to see it.The beds were very comfy though and despite these issues we did have a pleasant evening and a lovely breakfast. I wouldn't rush to stay there again due to the expense of the rooms but it was a novelty so i am glad we have seen it.

Oxford centre is not car friendly. If you can catch a bus from London or a train, this may be more convenient than trying to drive through Oxford Centre. You will need to be careful that you don't get fined for driving through restricted areas during the prohibited times.

PROS

1. Interesting history behind this property. It was a former prison cell and one cell was left in its original state.

2. Good breakfast which is usually included in the price. Very hearty English breakfast and a great range of juices. The pastries taste a little stale though

3. Depending on who you get, you can either get great service or indifferent service. Luckily we got some good service more often than poor service.

CONS

a. Parking is very expensive at the hotel but it use your only option if you are driving. Its very hard to find parking in the Oxford Centre

b. The bath towel railings in the toilets are extremely hot. Since the toilet is very small its very easy to touch the railing and you will get a very bad burn.

c. Accommodation in the UK is very expensive and Oxford is no exception. Certain travelers will find that they get less than what they expected than in other countries for the price they pay.

d. No swimming pool or fitness centre for those that need those facilities.

If you get a Prison Cell room it makes for a wonderful experience. The standard rooms are nondescript 4 star hotel rooms though.

The building is beautiful, but the service isn't. Rather than having an efficient reception, Malmaison make you sit down as a couple at a desk. It feels like you are being grilled by your bank manager for a mortgage application. It also makes reception look very untidy, and when I arrived there was a 10-15 min queue to check in. A normal reception would process people far faster. The entrance was rather chaotic.

The room was interesting and very comfortable, but the wifi and the temperature control did not work.

In the bar, there was no-one to serve us either....

This could be a brilliant hotel if they invested in the customer care needed to justify the very premium pricing.

After our wedding we didnt have enough money for a big overseas break, so we went for something different, cheaper, and something just for us. We looked around and eventually opted for the weekend at Malmasion Oxford, with Dinner B&B. Just by looking at the prison, castle, and reviews, it looked good and original.
Right from the start we were impressed, the setting, look and venue from arriving were amazing! The car was taken away, check in went without hassle, and we were very happy! Having arrived straight from our wedding to the hotel, to have everything go so smooth from the onset was a god send.
The staff couldnt of been more polite and helpful if they'd tried! For instance, one receptionist even took us on a tour and was our photographer for 30 minutes! We have some lovely photos from the hotel/prison for our wedding album!
The room was out of this world, we were upgraded to a suite, if you have the money, do this, i have never seen a room like this! I have travelled the world with my job in the Forces, but this was the best ever!
The Deputy Manager John Ryan, did us proud, a huge thank you John from us, you made our honeymoon dream come true! Thank you! This guy went out of his way to treat us like royalty! He made us feel like nothing was a problem, and that we were really the only people staying there (obviuosly we werent), i can honestly say that this was the best hotel experience and stay i have EVER had worldwide, and i consider this to be mainly to John Ryan, as long as he is there, we will return!
Overall, the staff were polite, helpful, the hotel was clean, fun, quiet but lively, the venue was amazing, the suites were out of this world! The resturant was the best, all our meals were amazing, and the service tip top! Breakfast was superb, both room breakfast and in the resturant!
Our recommend is stay here, whether for honeymoon, romantic weekend away, a short break, STAY here, youll be so impressed i promise, we had the best time ever, honestly.
So thank you Malmasion Oxford and thank you John Ryan, you gave us the best start to married life possible!

Room Tip: Choose the suite with the cinema! WOW!

We stayed here for the weekend and lived in Oxford at the time. The hotel is beautifully decorated, a little expensive but well worth it for a treat. The food was the best I had ever eaten, particularly the eggs benedict for breakfast. We stayed in the normal rooms and loved it. Very quiet and the castle is within walking distance and bars/restaurants. The prison was a nice side attraction to see. Lovely bar at the top of the drive, particuarly in the summer with the top deck.. Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: The prison rooms were interesting but freaked me out a little due to the fact it used to be a prison...
