This was our third visit to this hotel, each time we had been impressed (see other reviews) and each time we have moved up to a higher speced room. This time we went for a duplex suite.
The web site says. "A slinky split level affair featuring beds of an epic scale, feature baths with monsoon shower and outdoor balcony overlooking the historic castle mound"
We split level I cannot argue with, and yes the bed was there. But its the bathroom that was a real let down. The shower was far from ideal, monsoon it was not, in fact it was hardly a light drizzle. There was no pressure to speak of and therefore the luke warm water that was coming out, was cold by the time it meandered towards me. The same was for the bath as well, in fact if you tried to turn on a tap, the shower was even less monsoon like. Ontop of this the shower base was chipped and worn and one of the two sinks didnt drain at all well. These may seem like petty complaints, but if you cannot get clean before a night out, and in the morning, it really takes the edge of the stay, especially when we have to use someone elses shower (a friend in another room) to get ready in.
We brought the shower to the attention of the staff, but the issue was still there in the morning. We brought it up again when we checked out ( I apologise to the check in staff in we smelt, but thats a lack of shower for you), but nothing was offered apart from an apology.
In other areas the hotel appears to be showing signs of being unloved. Fraid carpets, bad water staining in corridors and subsequent stained carpets, front desk unmanned for a quite a while at one point.
It all adds upto a hotel that has lost its edge, and now its lost a repeat client.

Where do I start.........

I found my experience with the Malmaison exceptional from the moment I booked the room full of excitement about our stay in the hotel to celebrate our Anniversary.

I was originally meant to stay on the 17th July but due to my partners work commitments etc we had to Postpone till the 1st August. Vicki in reservations was brilliant a real credit to the hotel and re-arrange our dates not just once but twice.

It’s clear on the website that check-in isn’t till 3pm, so I don’t understand people expressing their disappointment in their reviews about this. I luckily had a mid-week stay booked and the room was un-used the night before so we were able to check in at 11am. We had a spacious Double in the Cells. The interior of the hotel on entering is fantastic and this continued through-out the hotel and into the bedroom. The bedroom and Bathroom were to die for pure luxury.

With only a couple of minutes walk into the town the location was excellent, We didn’t have dinner at the hotel (But again the Menu is on the website so I don’t understand peoples shock to the prices in the restaurant) but we had Breakfast as part of our package! The food was delicious and to a very high standard.

The staff we found extremely polite, helpful with strong customer service skills you couldn’t fault.

We will definitely be staying again, and would recommend highly to anyone.

It was Perfect :-)

Room Tip: I would recommend staying in the cells to have the full experience of the hotel.

Just back after staying in a cell room, which was excellent! my wife & i paid £490 for bed breakfast & evening meal which i think is expensive, but turned out to be even more so as when you go for evening meal the drinks were very costly & we also had to pay extra £4water £4 for bread,£3-50 for all side orders, having already paid for the meal in our 2day break deal with 1 bottle of rose wine our bill came to £154 + 10%surcharge for a average sevice! A lovely 2day break, but feel we were ripped off big style in the restaurant!!

The exterior of this hotel is impressive as is the interior. Plusses first, breakfast was exceptional and great value as we bought a 2 cocktails and dinner package for £25. We were upgraded (it was the last stop for us on our honeymoon) to The Clink which was downstairs in the main building rather than the prison. The room, bathroom and snug were fab - Nespresso machine, and lovely touches all around and luxurious toiletries. Service from the bar staff and restaurant staff was second to none as with the guys who parked and retrieved our car.
HOwever...... Reception staff were at best disinterested and at worst inaccurate and somewhat rude. Check in was tortuous and the lady doing it appeared to believe she was doing us a favour by taking my credit card and allocating me a room. Wine in our room was half drunk - on check out we pointed that out and were told usually people just drink it and fill it up with water - use of corked bottles rather than screw tops would easily prevent that. The light in the room and bathroom was minimal so ladies, dont take a downstairs room if you want to put makeup on in your room, I did mine in the car! Finally, we were overcharged. We had been given a complimentary upgrade and then charged full price for the room. We stayed during the second week of June and despite 4 telephone calls and an e-mail, no one has contacted us or attempted to refund the overcharge. Disappointing.
A good experience overall, but let down by poor staff and dodgy billing.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building out of the basement. Basement rooms are dingy.

Stopped off on a Sunday night on the way back to Glasgow after a wonderful weekend at GoodWood. Great location within walking distance of the town centre and the the University area, where we were keen to visit the filming location for Morse (Lewis)! Have stayed at Malmaison Glasgow and Newcastle and recommended this one due to its quirkiness as a converted prison! Have to say we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The hotel is quite amazing – great fun but stylish and rooms are lovely with everything you need. The restaurant was busy for a Sunday night and didn’t feel like a hotel restaurant. A good experience and we would definitely recommend.

Just spent two lovely days in the Malmaison Oxford. Great location, incredibly helpful staff and good value for money as we had the Dream deal. In addition to our lovely room not a cell, we had a delicious cocktail each and a scrummy two course meal.
£145 for two with room, dinner and a cocktail each, we thought was great value for money.
Thanks to all the helpful reception staff especially the new guy, who we think is Spanish!

The hotel is located very centraly and the building is very interesting(old castle/prison) with a big history behind it.The stuff was very helpful and polite, although we were a bit dissapointed by the fact that we had to wait until 3:00 for check in (in most hotels you can check in much earlier).
The room was very luxurious ,although maybe a bit expensive. It would not hurt if they included slippers in the room .
