“Sunday escape”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

We booked on the sunday to take advantage of the deal that Malmaison did offering reduced rate Sun night solong as you spend a set minimum on food and drink. We have visited the Oxford hotel previosly and on each time just love the way in which the old Prison has beeen restored. The old cells have beed turned into really cool rooms, we had one of the Wardens rooms this time and was equally impressed. The cocktail bar which was the old prisoners visiting roon is worth a visit also. Food was really good and staff very attentive.

Room Tip: just enjoy this is a great place

We went to Malmaison for a birthday treat.I found the surroundings very lovely and unusual. We had a very good meal which we enjoyed. The service was good and the atmosphere pleasant. It is a good venue for a special occasion. We thought our meal was a reasonable price. It does help that they accept the Gourmet card.Drinks were perhaps a little expensive.I think too that chairs which are a little more comfortable would have enticed us to linger for longer. However it was a good experience over all.

The hotel itself is great. Good rooms, and interesting ambience. At the price I think dressing gowns should be included in the room. I would advise not to go for package deals as you end up paying too much for food which explains why I thought the food in the restaurant was way over-priced. My tempura was a standard pub starter, my risotto main course was poor (excessive liquid) and the pear crumble was far too sweet. Good wine list. I would gladly stay at the hotel again but I would eat elsewhere.

Dear Douglas M,

Thank you for taking the time to write with your review. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed the hotel though I am sorry to read that we were unable to exceed your expectations with regard to the food.

We have a new menu coming on the 19th February and perhaps this will better suit your taste.

It was not easy to find the place as no outside sign from the road is lighted.
It is a strange feeling when you go to your room as it is lots of stairs up and down, long corridors.
Checking was quick, room is nice, functional, comfortable.
I was surprise that it's no porter at all.
Restaurant is average, my food came very quick and have to send it back, calves leaver was row...ask for a small glass of wine and it came as a large one.
I will stay here again but don't eat at the restaurant.
Bath water was not very hot.
Not sure it's a place for a single person...

We looked at some of the reviews which were negative, but we brushed them aside as therewere some people right or wrong have their own views, we decided to find out. It was my 60th birthday and my wife and I with our closest friends booked the hotel, when we arrived the reception staff were brilliant and very friendly and upgraded us to a cell all four of us. The room or cell was brilliant, the lighting was low but that what created the atmosphere. The hotel had a special treat for me with a card and little cakes to compliment me on my birthday, what a lovely touch. We went for our meal, and listen I have eaten in many hotels whilst working away from home, and the food was 10 stars never mind 4 stars, when we ordered the food the meal was brought out my a different waiter and instead of saying who is on this they knew who to serve straight away, total professionalism. They never rushed us, and the evening was brilliant. The next day they took all our bags and overnight cases and stored them for us whilst we looked around Oxford when we came back Nora the lady at reception took us on guided tour of different rooms that we might want to stay in for the future. The hotel is brilliant, the staff are brilliant and all I can say it was the best birthday present I could have had. Well done the Malmaison. You are all a credit to your company, thank you and god bless xxxxxx

Room Tip: Just go and enjoy it.

Stayed here as part of the "Sunday stop over deal" where if you spend £75 in the restaurant you can stay over night for an extra £25.
Receptionist on arrival was lovely and very sweet and helpful. Stayed in the adjoining building so not the prison cells, might be worth paying more for the prison cells for the whole prison experience. Beautiful room, nice bathroom.
The food in the restaurant was really nice but very pricey. Service was really good however I was charged for a more expensive steak then I ordered but this was quickly put right by a really helpful waiter.
I would definately go back.

We have just spent the weekend at the Malmaison to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday and had a lovely stay.
Prior to arrival I had good email communication from staff when I had any questions and a courtesy call a few days before arriving to check our booking.
The sat nav postcode they gave us got us there but we did drive past the gate a couple of times as not immediately obvious that is where the hotel is.
I paid extra for the parking, it is very overpriced but I knew the car was in safe hands for the whole weekend.
On arrival checking in was swift and efficient with friendly staff who were very helpful.
There is an original cell downstairs that you can view which is very interesting. On the ground floor there was an exhibit of pictures, I would rather have had some information and old pictures of the castle/prison though.
I had booked a superior cell room and it was worth the extra money, the décor was to a good standard and the room was immaculately clean. We appreciated the card and sweet nibbles to celebrate hubby's birthday as well as the extra pillows I had requested prior to arrival. As has been mentioned previously the room is very dark, I thought people may have been moaning a bit but actually it is very dark and hard to see to read. It totally suits the room being dark but the lights could do with dimmer switch or wall reading lights. The bed suited my husband but I found it too hard to sleep comfortably. A handy book on Oxford in the drawer and my husband appreciated the magazines on the coffee table (Men's health, GQ and a travel mag), could have done with something for the ladies though.

We paid to "upgrade" to a cooked breakfast (a totally unnecessary extra) and apart from the full English couldn't fault it. Everything we had and that we saw other people have was of a very high standard and really tasty.
The full English breakfast was on a par with a bad service station breakfast. My husband would have preferred more quantity, he had a small mushroom, half a tomato, one fried egg, one sausage, one slice of black pudding and two rashers of bacon. We both had the breakfast and the black pudding needed more cooking and the bacon was so under done parts of it were raw. By the time we had mentioned it to staff we had eaten the rest although they did offer to cook more bacon as we could not eat it.
The continental breakfast was well stocked although it would have been nice to have a selection of meat and cheese out to choose from rather than order a plate from the menu. A good selection of fresh fruit (though the wooden spoons used to serve them are more for show than actually being of much use)
We went to the bar after we had been out both nights and we really liked it, yes it again is very dark but it really suits the mood and the ambience of the place. My husband enjoyed sampling the cocktail menu and it's great for people watching.
The hotel is situated in a great location and it's really easy to get around to see all the sights.
We highly recommend a local Chinese restaurant called SoJo which is about 7 minutes walk away. The best Chinese meal we have ever tasted but you would be wise to book.
One other little thing to mention is to check the price when checking out, I didn't notice until I got home that the accommodation bill was more than I had been quoted when I booked but I am awaiting the hotel to get back to me about that.
It really is worth booking here for a special break.

Room Tip: Worth booking a cell room to get the full experience.
