“Incredible service”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

Had a fantastic one night stay at the launch of our bike trip through the Cotswolds. We're welcomed by the very lovely and professional Amy, who gave us sightseeing tips around the hotel and Oxford and late at night became an emergency triage nurse when one of our kids became ill, dashing up the stairs to be sure we were properly connected to National Health, and helping us track down the proper medicines. In the morning (still on duty!) she checked us out with charm and aplomb. We look forward to returning to the hotel where all the service (Jonathan at the door was also very helpful with luggage and bikes) was superb and the good in the brasseries delicious. Thanks to all.

I'm something of a 'regular' at the 'Mal' in Oxford, though I'm normally allergic to chains that are trying too hard to be cutting-edge cool. Oxford (and Cambridge) have too few really good hotels, but the Malmaison combines an interesting refurbishment (many of the rooms are former prison cells), a good central location, good food (particularly their take on a full English breakfast), comfy rooms and reasonably attentive staff. Hard to complain!

They've done a nice job in renovating the prison, but there are some flaws. First, despite it being prison, it seems that you can hear most of what is going on in the rooms around you. Also, many of the rooms face the inner courtyard. This is fine on rainy days when no one from the bar or elsewhere is hanging out outside. But, when the rain does let up, people hang out and drink and talk at the top of their lungs until late. And, as the rooms aren't soundproof, this noise travels right into the room. Also, the front desk folks are not entirely customer service oriented. When I checked in, they gave me a room on the ground floor. I indicated that I had requested a room *not* on the ground floor. The desk clerk said that this was the only room that was ready for me. But, then, she saw that there was a note in my file about not wanting a ground floor room and suddenly another room was available. I didn't appreciate being lied to just because she didn't want to change my room. Finally, I stayed in May. Perhaps they have an idea that it should be warm outside in May, but it wasn't. So, it wasn't that good that the heat didn't work and that they didn't fix it when I asked. Summary: the hotel is a good concept but they don't quite deliver when it comes to service and undisturbed sleep.

Room Tip: You might ask for a room that is not near or facing the pub if you don't want late night noise.

There are some good deals on for this hotel with dinner bed & breakfast, but unfortunately we were there on a Saturday and for over £200 a night for room only the experience was a disappointment. The hotel itself is in a great position bang in the centre of Oxford and the old prison layout is interesting. Rooms are quite small, beds I couldn't fault. Disappointing that the toiletries didn't seem to have been properly refilled - ie. only the shower gel and shampoo, but no body lotion, only cotton wool pads in the little tube. I am sure these would have been refilled if I had bothered to ask but that is not the point. Also, no bottles of water provided - nowadays even the lowliest B&B has these on offer and I wasn't prepared to pay their rates for water.

Why do hotels these days charge extra for breakfast when you have already paid through the nose for the room? Breakfast was an extra £13 on top of the room rate and that was only for the continental- the cooked was an extra £2. However the quality of the breakfast and the waiting staff were both excellent.

Also disappointed there was no Spa or gym facilities. The website is frustrating in the extreme and it was very difficult to actually find out if there were these facilities at this location.

A birthday treat for the other half. Used the Sunday Saver deal as this was a much more affordable option.
Friendly warm welcome from the receptionist. Had a very nice superior cell room 127. Roll top bath and big shower, with nice toiletries and dressing gowns. Well stocked mini bar and snacks but didn't have any of them as they were very expensive. Pop to Sainsburys up the road and get them at a quarter of the price!
Reception sent up a birthday card and a small complimentary platter of mini cakes, which was a nice touch.
Reception staff were always very helpful and prompt with requests.
Dinner was very nice but very pricey! The end bill had some extra charges I wasn't expecting. I don't think think the menu prices included vat? Could be wrong but I was a little surprised when I got the bill for £95 for 3 course and one drink each. I'd visit the hotel again but wouldn't eat there due to prices.

If you like Malmaison, want the centre of Oxford, want to stay in an H.M. Prison themed boutique hotel and you're prepared to pay then Malmaison, Oxford is the place!
From our arrival in the car park to our departure there were always intelligent, knowledgeable and well spoken staff on hand to help us .
Really good room and bathroom.
Food in the Brasserie was excellent. Steak Frites, Rack of Westcountry Lamb were both superb and the house red" plonk" very drinkable.
Breakfast range, from buffet to cooked , was great. The full English, eggs Benedict, scrambled egg and salmon all very good indeed.
If you like cocktail bars great. Partners Piña Colada was good but Beer? Iam prepared to pay £6 a pint , but for Heineken? Stella, San Miguel, yes! Heineken no!
The Mean Time Brewery's IPA was a better choice.
All in all a worthwhile visit and I would certainly go again

Room Tip: Best located rooms are on the floor just a few steps up from the reception area.

Stayed here for a Birthday Treat, took us a while to find the hotel as it's tucked away down a narrow driveway! Anyway, there was nowhere to park outside so we popped the car just outside the doors whilst we checked in.. whilst checking in a rather rude man came over and told us we cant park there and it needs to be moved immediately, it was obvious we had only parked there whilst we checked in and the staff would move the car to the car park once completed! We stayed in one of the suites (Thomas Lowton Robbins suite) It was slightly confusing trying to find it but we did eventually! The suite was lovely but as I've found with the Mal suites the standards do slip, (light bulbs out, splashes up the wall, splash marks on glass pictures... i could go on) It is a shame really as it could be perfect if they maintained it! Anyway! the building is stunning so definitely take a walk around if you get the chance and visit the original cell, would I stay in the hotel again? I highly doubt it.
