I've stayed here a few times for business and have always found it clean and comfortable. The building is beautiful and imposing, especially in the evening. The location is perfect - it's just a five minute walk from the train and bus stations, and right in the city centre so well located for exploring the local parks and universities. Amenities included a very hot bath/shower, toiletries (conditioner, shower gel, moisturiser), clean towels and slippers, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Room service has a good selection but there are also several decent restaurants right on the doorstep. A night in the cells is more expensive but even the standard rooms show signs of the old prison. Definitely one of the nicest hotels in Oxford by far.

Room Tip: Rooms on the lower ground floor struggle with Wi-Fi. I believe it is possible to get a standard room...

Visited for one night to treat our daughter on her graduation & had a very memorable stay. Building is fascinating & staff very helpful, rooms very well cleaned, but there were some maintenance issues, for example we booked 3 rooms & 2 had problems with the hot water! 2 were also a bit hot, but that may well have been our inability to set the temperature control correctly!!

Grounds are lovely, flowers - both real & sculptural are beautiful. Attention to detail in rooms was very good, blinds fitting perfectly, low lighting in bathrooms was very nice & there was an excellent tea & coffee selection.

Breakfast was good, but wasn't replenished often enough, plus insufficient spoons for all toppings etc was frustrating - so allow for a bit more time, take your teaspoon & enjoy it as it arrives!

Dear Mich765,

Thanks for a fab review, it is always great to hear when our guests have a great stay in the hotel. I was very pleased you liked the property itself and thought the staff were very helpful.

I am sorry you experienced issues with the water, it can, at times be very temperamental though I can assure you we are working hard to ensure it is fully resolved not to affect any guests stay. I will also speak with the breakfast team, topping up quickly and ensuring enough serving spoons are the most basic of our guests expectations.

Thanks again for the review. We do hope to see you again soon.

Paul

My husband booked this hotel and I have to say I had not heard of it before but what a surprise. It was fabulous. It is a converted prison with so many of the original features. It is a fun upbeat hotel. Sadly we were unable to stay in a "cell" but hopefully next time! Staff were courtesy. We only ate breakfast there but the food was very good. I can't wait to go back.

What an interesting hotel in which to stay - a former prison .
We stayed in The Governor's House - I think - William Henry Kebble .What a lovely light and airy room - well furnished and very, very clean .- Full marks to the Housekeeper and staff ! the only ' thing ' which was a bit of a nuisance was that the 'pug/closure to the washbasin was difficult to lift , it had to be removed ' manually '- Not good if you have beautifully manicured nails . the room had all the usual items you would find in a hotel room e.g.tea / coffee making facilities , ironing board , bathrobes - sadly No trouser press .
Breakfast was very good with Continental and cooked items available .
Oh dear , Dinner the previous evening was a bit of a disaster , as there was an inordinately long wait for courses to arrive ; and we asked for coffee with our pudding and the coffee arrived twenty minutes before pudding .After a conversation with The Manager the following morning ALL was 'put right ' to our advantage . Which augurs well for a return visit , ( we were visiting our granddaughter - a student at Oxford ).As I said initially an interesting hotel , many of the bedrooms are former prison cells , with landings and metal stairways !!

Room Tip: Try to stay in a room which is not on a landing , perhaps a suite or a Governor's room.

My girlfriend and i went here for cocktails in May after she had previously been, so we knew it would be good.

Confusingly it seems to have a number of different bars in it as last time my girlfriend thought the bar was on the 3rd floor. This time we were directed to the bar in the basement. Decor is as nice as you come to expect from Malmaison as we have been to a few.

Drinks menu was very good having everything we wanted. Staff were very friendly and we were always served in a timely fashion. The standard of the drinks was mostly high, apart from when we wordered a bloody mary made by one individual missing some key ingredients, but it was soon corrected by the bat manager so we were happy. Must give a special mention to the bar manager actually as he was very friendly and chatty and helped make the evening very good. We will definitely return here next time we are in Oxford.

We had a lovely weekend stay here for my husbands 40th. After much research I booked the hotel and was overall very impressed. I read several negative comments on tripadvisor about the poor service but we only experienced excellent service. The food on the restaurant was really lovely and again, the service excellent. The inclusive breakfast was wonderful too. Nice rooms which were well equipped. Couldn't really fault anything. Only thing I would moan about is the expensive parking charges for simply parking outside the hotel. This added a hefty chunk onto our hotel bill but maybe all hotels are the same? Great stay and I would recommend definitely.

Stayed for 1 night (Saturday ). Room was a bit basic and for the price (£300 plus) expected a bit more but ok for 1 night. The area adjacent to the hotel is lively with numerous bars so a good location for a fun weekend .

Had room service and the food and service was ok but did not eat elsewhere in the hotel so cannot comment further.
