Two nights in a very unusual surroundings! We stay in a deluxe room (three cells) and it was kept in a very good condition. Bed was firm and comfy. Hairdryer, kettle, air-con all worked as expected. The room was pretty much perfect.

Breakfast was in the downstairs bar with full English offered or just standard continental. The continental was more than enough for us! There was also a bar on the third floor which was huge with nice comfy sofas and table service. My only comment here was it could have done with some background music as it did seem a little empty even with 15 people in the room.

We didn't get a chance to try their restaurant as we ate out, may be next time.

We used their parking service where a concierge takes your vehicle into the bowels of an underground car park which looked secure. Here it stayed for while we explored Oxford and all it has to offer.

The Tower Tour next door (Malmaison guests get discount) gives an excellent insight into the cities history and the jails origins. The Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers museums are an absolute must. A nice escape from the busy city centre is the river - walk to the end of the High Street and a chauffeur will punt you up and down the river, quite relaxing. We took advantage of an evening without the kids and went to the Odeon cinema just 5 minutes walk which seemed tiny compared to our out of town one but nice all the same.

To summarise, a lovely hotel, a busy city, two days was simply not enough to see the highlights.

Wow! We had a great stay at this hotel. What a "bang up" place :-). We got the Executive Suite. It was SO nice. We wanted to stay in the room all day!!! It is a conversion of a jail and done really nice. The bathtub was very good. The food was good. Will go back.

This is one of the best UK hotels I have stayed in hands down! The staff went above and beyond as it was our anniversary and we had chocolate covered strawberries given to us in our room and a few other little extras at check in ( Amy was amazing and very helpful) we upgraded and the roll top bath was well worth it! The cell we had was spacious and we loved the quirkiness! The location was perfect and the fairy lights outside in the courtyard where the restaurants are made it feel like we were abroad. All very romantic! Very clean with touches of luxury. Cocktails at the bar were a bit pricey but as it was a special occasion we didn't mind. Parking was full so we parked a short walk away but wasn't a problem at all. Breakfast was lovely and lots of choice. All in all a magical experience. We can't wait to go back.

Upon arrival this hotel really does have to wow factor, set in a little court yard amongst a little wine bar, Prezzo, Pizza Express, first impressions of the hotel are great.

We arrived at 9.30pm and check in was smooth and efficient although the receptionist could of told us more about the hotel, for example that it had a old cell still in tact to go and look at that we didn't find out about until we left!!!

Valet parking is efficient, but the most expensive valet we have ever used, even in 5* hotels, at £28.50 for the night, 12 hours to be exact!!!!

We had booked a superior cell room including continental breakfast for £180, again, a little steep for a Monday night!!! The hotel still remains as much as possible like a prison, for example, exiting the lift on the 4th floor, the landings of a prison, think "Bad Girls' tv programme. The doors to the rooms are the original cell doors, another quirky point. The room resembles every other Malmaison hotel, except this time it was made up of 3 cells with original beams and windows, great for something different. There was a shower and a big deep bath and the comfortable as ever Mal queen bed. There was a mini bar, hair dryer, iron, air con, black out shutters....

We ate at the brasserie dowstairs and was some what let down. We ordered the soup and prawn cocktail to start, very good and both had the New York Strip for main (the smallest of the three portions sizes.) I ordered my steak medium-well, it came out rare, so I had to send it back. The steak had been cut up prior to serving so this was presumably clearly visible to the chef. The chips were the biggest let down, picky I know but how hard can it be to fry some mcdonalds style chips?? They was just crisp, with no potato in them, a little too long in the fryer I suspect... Service was polite but slow, tables were left uncleared around us a guests left, not to mention expensive. Our meal cost around £120, for 2 courses, 2 sides, 1 bottle of (£25 was one of the cheapest) wine and 1 £10 cocktail. Prezzo would of possibly been a better choice...

The main bug bear, the discretionary 10% service charge, a personal pet hate if the service is not reflective, and especially as there was only 2 of us. We had this removed...

We didn't have breakfast in the morning, it was only continental so went elsewhere, we wasnt informed if there was a hot option...

Overall, just over £300 for 12 hours worth of average hotel experience, ill let you decide...

Stayed on a Sunday and Monday night, Ate in the Brasserie on Sunday drinks took ages to arrive, how long does it take to unscrew a bottle? Food was fairly ordinary and overpriced as well as taking for ever to arrive, pay extra for veg. All this was a shame as the hotel was fun to stay in but i would book a room well away from the bar/brasserie as we were kept awake until gone 2am by noisy guests sitting outside, the windows were firmly closed The rooftop terrace is good for drinks and chatting but eat elsewhere.

My partner and I booked a one night stay at the Mal on a Sunday. We arrived and were checked in promptly and allowed to park our car just out the front rather than have them valet park it. Our room was big, clean, lovely and cool (it was about 28 degrees outside!) and had lots of goodies in the mini bar.
We had a walk around the grounds and some bar snacks in the garden, food was lovely and we managed to sit down just in time for a play the castle were putting on. We then moved up to the roof terrace and relaxed in the sun with cocktails for the next 3 hours! Great table service and lovely atmosphere. I was surprised it wasn't busier.
We got ready and went down to the Brasserie for dinner. Unfortunately we ordered steak, to be told twenty minutes later they didn't have the amount we requested (it is the strip steak served in grams - we ordered the largest to share) but they could cook us up some steak, lamb and chicken instead and serve us a platter. We said this was fine. The food came out another half an hour later - and there was no steak! I questioned this and by the time the waitress returned nearly 10 minutes later she just said it was all they had. No plates were brought out for us to eat our dinner so everything was cold and we left it. The chicken was dry and the lamb was just cold. A very disappointing experience. We said we wouldn't be paying for the meal and they said that was fine.
I had a chat with a nice young lady at reception who kindly sent us up some room service and a bottle of fizz for the trouble. We would have much preferred to just be told that we couldn't have what we ordered - and ordered something else instead, rather than be brought out something we didn't order which was of a low quality.
I think we will stick to the London Mal in future as the service and overall experience is of a much higher standard.

This hotel is unique in many ways; old prison, high end quality finish, stylish yet authentic as it blends within the historic oxford city centre. Quite pretentious is many ways but if your staying here it's well worth it. On a rooftop, with a beer looking over Oxford on a warm summers evening catching glimpses of an outdoor theatre performance below. Worth it.
Whilst there is valet parking available, it's not cheap at around £30.
