Doing a self guided tour around Oxford, we popped into this building to have a look at the architecture more than anything. Friendly and helpful staff at reception directed us to the small museum in the corner of the building where we were greeted by a volunteer. She spent at least 20 minutes with us explaining Oxford's growth from the beginning of settlement and told us about the treasury of items on display in the rooms. The maps showing Oxford when it was barely settled and then up to modern times were particularly enlightening. Being on a day trip and never having been to Oxford before, we left the Museum with a different perspective of this city. Not just a college town but a fascinating ancient place with so much other history in it's evolution. The volunteer lady was very knowledgeable, the museum free and absolutely no pressure to go to the museum shop to spend.
