Owner description: Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed characters, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

“Evening tour of Oxford Castle”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

This was my second visit to Oxford Castle and two very different experiences. My first visit was with my grandson who thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as a prisoner and going into the cells. Climbing to the top of the tower, very narrow winding staircase, but the view of the dreaming spires of Oxford was well worth the effort to get to the top. I am reliably informed by my grandson that there are 99 steps to the top!! My latest visit was an evening visit on a very cold November evening and our tour guides, two in all, dressed in period costume, had a great sense of humour and were able to give us a good insight into the history of the castle. Climbing the tower in the evening is a totally different experience from climbing up there in the daytime, very dark, great care is required if you are an elderly visitor. To stand at the top of the tower on a clear moonlit night looking out over the beautiful city of Oxford was absolutely magical. If you are visiting Oxford do not miss this great attraction.

“Scary dungeons”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Good views from the top of the castle and spooky feeling in the crypt. Rather horrific stories of how prisoners were treated.

Excellent guided tour. Well worth a visit. A number of "chain" restaurants in the vicinity too if that is what you are looking for.

“Very informative and enjoyable”
Reviewed 19 November 2013 via mobile

As we've lived in the area for 14 years we thought the time had come to visit the castle, it was either that or the ashmolean museum and I think we chose wisely. If I had planned it better then I could have saved a couple of quid by booking online in advance, but must say it was worth the £9 or so entry fee. Having read the other reviews there's not much more to add, the advantage this has over other attractions is the guide, he made the trip very informative and catered for all types, from the oldies (my boisterous mother) to the young children..not an easy task but admirably performed. Plenty of steps to burn the Sunday roast off, poor old ma couldn't manage them all so missed the great view over Oxford..all in all a good, value for money, afternoon out!
