This was my second visit to Oxford Castle and two very different experiences. My first visit was with my grandson who thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as a prisoner and going into the cells. Climbing to the top of the tower, very narrow winding staircase, but the view of the dreaming spires of Oxford was well worth the effort to get to the top. I am reliably informed by my grandson that there are 99 steps to the top!! My latest visit was an evening visit on a very cold November evening and our tour guides, two in all, dressed in period costume, had a great sense of humour and were able to give us a good insight into the history of the castle. Climbing the tower in the evening is a totally different experience from climbing up there in the daytime, very dark, great care is required if you are an elderly visitor. To stand at the top of the tower on a clear moonlit night looking out over the beautiful city of Oxford was absolutely magical. If you are visiting Oxford do not miss this great attraction.
