“Value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2009

I stayed there in June 2009.
The people are nice and honest.
You checkin at the restaurant downstairs. If you check in around 6.30pm or before you should be ok. I have not tried to do this after 6.30pm.
The rooms are not new, but are ok. The cleaning and towels/linen is of the standard you expect from any hotel.
I would say it's definitely value for money. But do not expect any bells and whistles.
Do not consider this hotel for a romantic getaway... But it's good for short study/business trips if you do not have very generous budget.
And the location is very good.
The breakfast is included in the price. You can choose from a lebanese breakfast (vegetable; humous etc) or fried/scrambled eggs. Plan around 30 minutes for the breakfast to arrive if you have to be somewhere else on time...
Free Wifi is available, just ask at reception.

A conveniently located, calm, clean, and very reasonably priced bed-and-breakfast hotel with courteous and considerate staff in the heart of the buzzing Oxford neighbourhood of Jericho -- what's not to like?!? I recommend this hotel highly, particularly for the budget traveller or frequent visitor, as Oxford's hotels are generally terribly expensive and there are often two or three night minimum stays. What you will find at the Richmond is a comfortable, clean, inexpensive, and convenient place to stay. The Richmond is in the leafy but unbowed suburb of Jericho, which gives the traveller first-hand insight into why this colourful and lively Oxford neighbourhood is a sentimental favourite for students and professionals and old-timers alike. Staying at the Richmond will give you a better idea of what it's really like to live and study in Oxford than spending your time (and money!!!) at the Randolph or one of the high-street hotels. And for all you Americans out there, this is the neighbourhood where both Bill and Chelsea Clinton lived during their Oxford studies.

LOCATION: The Richmond is a stone's throw from the colleges, city centre, and Port Meadow. Keble, St John's, the Ashmole, and the Pitt-Rivers are all a five-minute walk; Wellington Square is a couple of minutes up the road; Oxford University Press is literally around the corner; the city centre via Wellington Square and St John Street is a leisurely ten minute stroll: for a real treat, take a walk on Port Meadow, which is a ten minute walk from the hotel into the open countryside with access to beautiful walks on the Isis and the glories of the Perch, St Margaret's Church, Binsey, and the Trout to follow -- this is the heart of Inspector Morse and Lewis Carroll territory. Much to explore -- so don't forget your walking shoes!!!

WHAT YOU GET: An inexpensive, clean, comfortable ensuite room with telly and fridge, desk, and a comfy chair, plus breakfast. However, this is not your typical English B&B -- no chintz to be found here! The hotel has a fun and funky twist as it is set above a popular Lebanese restaurant. The staff and proprietors are from Lebanon, and the service, breakfast, and furnishings in the rooms all delightfully reflect this. The courtesy and hospitality of the staff and proprietors are charmingly old-world and kindly. For breakfast, one has a choice between scrambled eggs, omelet, or a full Lebanese breakfast. Also, toast, tea, coffee, OJ, and a variety of cereals. I usually opt for a smaller version of their Lebanese breakfast: generous servings feta or halloumi cheese, yogurt, hummus, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, olives, pita bread, and olive oil. A great way to start the day! The omelet is, likewise, excellent!

THE RESTAURANT: If you want to dine at the restaurant downstairs, do plan ahead as the place books out quite quickly -- especially on weekends.

I was dismayed to read the two perhaps stridently negative reviews received by this wonderful little bolt-hole: perhaps these people were expecting chintz and full English breakfasts, but their reactions sound OTT from where I'm standing. I've stayed at the Richmond twice and I've also put up friends there over the years. The only complaint I've heard was from an American friend well over six-feet tall. He mentioned that his bed was not long enough -- but otherwise he had a fine stay.

I hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect when you stay at the Richmond. It's the best-kept secret in Jericho!

This was the worst hotel experience I have ever had!Very rude threatening staff.

2 weeks prior to arriving, i had booked 2 double bedrooms after 7 times of phoning i finally booked it over the phone when someone could be bothered to pick the phone up! On arrival to the hotel there was no-one at reception, we had to look for a member of staff in the sweaty restaurant below. The reception we got was cold , it made us feel that we were getting in the way and very unfriendly! The owner announced that only one key for one room was available and that we (2 couples) had to settle for one bedroom!!! No apologies..and he even threatened me when I mentioned 'I thought this was meant to be a hotel!' he replied in a very threatening voice 'you are being sarcastic to the wrong person!'
They offered to put up the second couple into another hotel outside of Oxford!! and for the couple to pay the difference.
This was unbelievable!

The rooms are dirty, dark and dingy! Very very cold as the heating was not turned on. Very old carpets, furniture. The beds were incredibly uncomfortable and the bathroom tiny and looked like it had never been cleaned.

This hotel is a thousand times worse than hostels i used to stay at as a backpacker!
Do not go!!!! I will be contacting Trading Standards, as this hotel can not continue to take money for such terrible standards and to call itself a 'hotel' is beyond me!
Please let this disuade you from ruining your experience in Oxford, stay in another hotel!!!

I have been going to the Richmond hotel for the last five years I have never ever faced any problem at all either with the staff or the rooms .
The breakfast is very nice they offer English and Lebanese breakfast both are very teasty plus a selection of cereal .
The hotel is located in a nice and safe area very close to the city centre .
I was very upset when I read the "Dreadful, don't go there." Review I am sure that the review was over the top I have recommended this hotel for too many people and they did the same but non of them had any problem at all they all said its cheap, clean, and has an easy access to the Oxford University Press, Oxford Refugee Centre, City Centre and too many other important places.
Therefore I strongly recommend this hotel for any one would like to visit oxford .

Finding a place to stay in Oxford without spending ludicrous amount of money is becoming more and more difficult.
When we decided to look for a hotel to stay over after my wife's Christmas party at the Randolph, we booked at the Richmond hotel for £50 B&B as
1) it was located within walking distance to the Randolph and
2) the quaint, friendly and serving good breakfast St. Michael's Guest House, where we stayed at the year before was unfortunately fully booked.

Anyway, the hotel is located above the Al-Shami Lebanese Restaurant in the very trendy Jericho area of Oxford.

To check-in, you need to go in the restaurant and ask at the bar for your keys. It's all a bit chaotic as they're trying to juggle food plates, people waiting to be seated and guests checking in upstairs so it feels very much like you're being a nuisance. Anyway, they do take the time to make you pay for the room in advance, something I'm always very wary about.

The room is down a dark corridor, large-ish with unplastered brick walls, a big Mona Lisa poster facing a huge mirror on the opposite wall. There's also a desk and a small TV. The view off the large windows is on Oxford's synagogue.

The bed is very small and terribly uncomfortable... pretty much as if you're sleeping on the floor really!

The en-suite bathroom is obviously an afterthought as they cut out a chunk of the room with cheap plasterboard to fit in this tiny shower room. It was very damp and smelly and the shower had a mould infestation I've never seen before... Absolutely terrible.

Anyway, after all this, we were hoping that the breakfast included would show off the skills of the Al-Shami kitchen staff (which is apparently quite good). We arrived in the restaurant room and we were asked by the most unpleasant waiter to sit down and to go and help ourselves... to a table full of mini packets of cereal.
After a while, he came back and offered us coffee and tea and toasts. That was it.

Needless to say, we were quick to leave this place and vowed never to come back, even for a meal at the restaurant. This is probably my worst hotel experience. Dreadful, don't go there.
