The Brits have a rather ambivalent relationship with baked goods. While there seems to be great demand for good bakeries, most seem to be satisfied with products from the omnipresent sandwich shops or supermarkets. Therefore, good artisan bakeries are a rarity. However, Gatineau is a huge exception. This place offers very fine patisserie, many sorts of pralines, and a wide range of other baked goods, such as bread, croissants or brioches.
This is not just a good French bakery in the UK, Gatineau would definitely stand out in France as well. We tried several sorts of tartes, the madeleines, brioches, mille-feuille and croissants. It is not only the high-quality which shines, but also the artisanry and the authenticity. I haven't had such delicious French classics outside of France - and even there most bakeries wouldn't be able to compete...and my French friends certainly agree on that
