Description: The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too. An imposing Victorian building set in acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream. The deck that wraps around the conservatory offers a rare opportunity in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view. In recognition of this, the Fishes was named Al Fresco Dining Pub of the Year in 2006, as well winner of The Public Vote in Oxfordshire Restaurant awards 2012 making it one of the best restaurants in Oxford.

We've been to this great pub as a family quite a few times, and always enjoyed it. The food is imaginative and good quality, and the decor and riverside setting are lovely. Highly recommended.

The only thing that would improve things might be some easier children's options. They only do small portions of adult meals, which is nice in theory, but it can sometimes be hard to find things that would suit a small child amongst a fairly challenging adult menu... (I'm not arguing for chicken nuggets, but more choices along the lines of sausage and mash or pasta might also help parents enjoy a more relaxed meal!)

Thank Lucy C

Fantastic location next to the river with an enormous garden. Great restaurant atmosphere inside and lovely outside dining terrace. Food is pretty good if not particularly cheap. It would have been worth the price if the service hadn't been generally very slow with a lack of knowledge of the menu and what was available to drink. Whilst the waitress said she was new I would have expected her to at least know what beers were available. We left without paying for coffee as it had not arrived after over 20 minutes.

Having looked at a few previous reviews, inconsistent service appears to be a theme here.

A few years ago we were frequent visitors to the Fishes. Been twice recently, both times small portions and over priced. When complained, although given more it was with a total lack of grace.

During, the last visit on top of the above gripes food took 50 minutes to turn up and that was only after chasing.

Positives, when it does come the food is tasty, generally. It is also a lovely setting.

First impressions are great but misleading. The bar is very atmospheric and inviting but appearances are deceiving. The food was awful and massively over priced. I basically paid £12.50 for a slice of quiche. Very disappointing. Ended up getting a cheese burger from MacDonalds on the way home. Will definitely not be returning.

We found this pub on a off chance, it is so beautiful inside and out. Set in a pretty location. Great garden for the kids to explore. Will definitely be back. We only popped in for a quick drink, but will be back to try out the food.
