Myself, my husband and kids stayed here for a long weekend, it looked pleasant on the website and when we got there and checked in we just looked at each other and went oh dear...!!! it is basically a pub for locals, the hallway to the toilets stunk of urine and i wouldnt let my kids use the pub toilets. The bedroom was extremely basic, the bedside lockers and furniture drawers fell apart when were opend, the window wouldnt close tight, i had to hold my hand over holes in the shower hose to wash myself!!
We were left fresh towels and the room was serviced daily. The breakfast was cooked made to order, which was fine. We didnt feel like having our dinner in the evenings there as the locals sort of took over, the music pounded until late and with young kids was not appropriate, we were right above the pub and im not joking the floor was literally vibrating with the loud music.
The punchbowl is a pub with rooms, it isnt for couples of families!! wont be returning ever again.

The room was clean but basic. It is well situated for a night or two but wouldnt want to stay longer. We were woken during the night by very noisy plumbing in adjacent room. Pointed it out to the manager so perhaps it has been fixed?

This is a pub for locals with sky sports, snooker table etc. The web site hinted a nice dining area with varied menu, in reality there were a few tables in the main bar, no sight of a menu or promotion of any food. After the pub closed, noise from the outside seating area went on until well after midnight with no regard for residents in rooms. The room was adequate, but the mattress was old & creaked every time you moved, there was no hairdryer in the room & the shower needed a clean. Room was very over-priced for the standard.

I really want to be able to recommend this inn. It is in a great location in the center of Woodstock, a short walk to Blenheim Palace. The nice lady (sorry I don't remember her name), cooked us an absolutely delicious, full English breakfast each morning (the best we had during our England visit). We also had a couple of delicious dinner meals at the pub. I think the lady that cooked our breakfasts was also responsible for cleaning the rooms and I think she did a great job with what she had to work with. The owner just needs to update the rooms. This is such a wonderful little inn. What is important to you when you travel? I don't need fancy. I just want a basic, clean room, with a clean bathroom and a reasonably comfortable bed. These beds were so creaky and by the time we checked out after a couple of nights, I had a pretty bad backache. The carpet is stained and the floor in the bathroom (linoleum) was badly buckled and pulling away from the shower and walls. Where moisture had collected in these spaces, there was mildew. It was supposed to have free wifi, but we could only access it down the hall from our room or in the pub downstairs. Not a biggy unless you really need access in your room. We loved this place so much, despite the negatives. It has such character and nice people work here. I hope the owner reads this and invests some money in updating it. I want to be able to return here!

Rude staff, dirty bathroom (washbasin had facial hair in it), generally dirty place, noisy and a very poor reflection of the lovely town and beautiful Palace
If you have the budget to go anywhere else, I'd recommend you do. If you don't I'd recommend a Travel Lodge outside Woodstock, or even camping rather than wasting your money here!

Room was large and comfortable (though being at the front got the weekend noise from the partying youth and traffic )
Food excellent, unpretentious but good value for money. They even went out and bought me fresh fruit for breakfast.
Staff could not have been more friendly and helpful.
OK bar was not 'twee' as was open plan and with the Sky sport TV's catered for that group of clients, but sofas were comfortable and there were lots of other oldy worldy places in the town to go to.

Firstly, let me say this - if you want to stay in a traditional old pub, then the Punchbowl is not for you.

However, if you do want to stay in clean, affordable accommodation, slap bang in the center of Woodstock, then this is for you.

The inside of the pub does not match the look outside, but you are staying here for the accommodation , not what the pub looks like inside. The pub has a more modern feel inside, with Pool table, dart board etc. Not traditional but still fine. We drank here a few times.

Many people have mentioned the noise. Again, you are staying above a pub, so there will be an element of noise from the bar downstairs. My wife and I stayed from Sunday night to Thursday night, and did not really notice any significant noise.

We did stay in room 6 which was at the back of the accommodation level, so it would have been quieter anyway. I did see that rooms 1 to 3 appear to be above the bar area, 4 and onwards towards the rear.

Anyway, back to the accommodation. Our room was number 6 and was extremely large, exceptionally clean and excellent value for money. We paid £260 for 4 nights which was a bargain.

Your entrance to the accommodation is the the rear of the pub via a small on site car park, so you do not have to go through he pub if you do not want to.

They also provide a car park on site which was handy.

The Punchbowl is literally 30 seconds walk from the entrance to Blenhiem Palace.

We have stayed in Oxford before, but chose to stay in Woodstock this time. The town is exceptional and has a decent array of restaurants and pubs.

The Punchbowl do do food, but we did not have any, so can't comment.

Bus number S3 stops right outside and takes you in to Oxford for £5 per adult return. Journey takes approx 20 - 25 mins.

So if you want excellent clean affordable accommodation then I would choose the Punchbowl. I will stay there again.
