“Nice but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

My husband, friends and I stayed at the Feathers for a long weekend. We were disappointed with the size of the rooms, how hot the rooms were and the lumpy pillows. The wardrobe was more for a child than two adults and the bedside cabinets were propped up on the skirting boards. The iron and ironing board were terrible - no cloth or foam on the board and the iron didn't hold water and swamped everywhere. However, although there was no coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms, the staff were quick at bringing what you required at any time of the day. However a biscuit wouldn't have gone a miss please! The breakfast was fine. Dinner was nice but very nouveau cuisine leaving you feeling hungry and your pocket empty. Drinks were expensive. That said the stay was pleasant and the darkhaired female receptionist was extremely helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: The stairs case is spiral, narrow and very steep so if unsteady on feet or have a large suitcase bew...

Booked The feathers for a two night treat for our anniversary and we were not disappointed . The warm welcome we received on arrival from the receptionist was a theme that was continued all weekend from all members of staff encountered- they really could not do enough to ensure our stay was lovely. Our room was stylish and very comfortable- much welcome addition of fan provided- very warm weather! Everywhere was beautifully clean( I am particularly fussy by nature) and we were very pleased with the breakfast which we enjoyed on both mornings-. All in all a very enjoyable, relaxing stay at a lovely hotel - will defiantly return.

We stayed as a family in a suite. The receptionists were very friendly, the suite tastefully furnished. The whole place had an understated, welcoming atmosphere. Food was tasty, but portions not huge. Service mixed, some staff very friendly others much less so. A couple of small lapses, we were promised tea, but it didn't materialise, neither did the paper we'd ordered. The location is excellent, the garden area is secluded and nicely laid out. I would happily return.

Room was very nice, small but cosy, however this made it boiling although they did supply a fan - we had to have all the windows open all night and we could hear the kitchen until very late at night and very early in the morning so room 14 not recommend for a lie in. Breakfast was also very disappointing, I don't eat red meat so I asked if I could have anything else with the eggs Benedict such as mushrooms or smoked salmon but was told no, I could only have eggs and hollandaise and when they came they were really over done not runny at all but shrivelled. Really disappointing - there was no mini croissants left and these never got replaced and we came down at 8.30 so not late!!
However the receptionist Dana was an absolute credit to the hotel very friendly and welcoming.

My husband booked this lunch out as a thank you for me. It was not cheap, so he unwittingly thought that it would be exceptional , it was far from this, the food was presented as Nuevo cuisine and was non existent , good job we were not hungry, but the crowning insult was the price of a small glass of wine at £ 7.50 and a half of shandy at £4.50.
No wonder we are giving up supporting our businesses in this country when they continue to rip us off in this manner.

It is truly disappointing to read your comments.

We offer a wide selection of wine by the glass so I am sorry that you ended up with one of our most expensive. Half a lager shandy costs either £2.00 or £2.10 depending on whether it is Stella 4 or Budweiser.

Following this feedback I have instructed our Head Chef to re-visit the sandwich offering and we will be changing this next week.

I would ask that you contact me at the hotel so we can discuss this further.

We visited the hotel for just one night whilst visiting Oxford. The deal which included Dinner, afternoon tea and breakfast was incredible value and I would certainly look for any similar deals as if each element was paid for at full rate then the value would have been nowhere near as good. To take each element separately I would say that breakfast was very nice and included all alternatives available in quality hotels. Afternoon tea taken in the courtyard was particularly good and the homemade scones were as good as I have had anywhere. We had the tasting menu in the evening which was very nice although I I'm not sure I would have chosen it for £55 each had it not been included in the deal as I would have chosen individual items from the a la carte menu. We had the room on the ground floor by the courtyard which was again very nice and well appointed although the toiletries provided were not of great quality. The only downside was that the sound insulation between the room and the room above was non-existent and as a result we were awoken many times in the night by persons moving about above. This is a nice hotel with a good atmosphere and helpful staff. It is well worth a visit particularly if you can get a deal. Finally, if you like a gin or two then the bar is extremely well stocked with a huge variety of gins.

I was thrilled with everything at The Feathers! We chose the hotel for our American friends travelling with their three teenage children; they all loved it.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, from organising the reservation for the numbers and specifications if rooms required to accommodating us all as late night diners in the restaurant.
Dinner was wonderful the standard of food superb and it was nice to see local suppliers delivering the next morning. Breakfast also to a very good standard with plenty of choice and quality produce - no hot buffet here, all cooked to order!
All the rooms are individually decorated and we soon got used to navigating the warren of stairs and landings, it all added to the charm! Everything we needed was available and the tea room service with fresh milk was a welcome change to those awful UHT offering found in some establishments of similar standards!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Feathers and would definitely stay here again.
