“Be prepared for a very long wait for food!”
Reviewed 7 December 2013

I absolutely agree with the other reviews about the long, long waiting times to be shown to our table, to see the menus for food and wine and to eat our food. One person front of house to look after both the restaurant and bar is not sufficient. The waitress did her best but we felt totally ignored at times. When we complained to the manager, she totally ignored our comments. The food is good but this establishment is doomed to failure and diners will not return if they do not address where they are going wrong.

“Red Lion makes us see red”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

Arrived promptly for 7.30pm booking. No one to greet us . Girl serving the three solitary customers in the bar. We were ignored and after several minutes I asked for our table and we entered the almost empty restaurant. Sat for ten minutes before the bar person arrived with menus. 45 minutes later we were served our first course. Incidentally we had been asked to pre-order our choice of courses before arrival!
Further waiting between each course despite no other customers in the restaurant. The food was good. Pity about the poor service and the attitude of the owner when it was mentioned who was defensive and blamed us because two of our party had arrived late.( Two arrived five minutes after we first sat down.)
We would never return to this place.

“Fabulous meals...Great Atmosphere”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

Frequent user who knows this is the best food for miles. Wouldn't know where to go for better.
Atmosphere warm and friendly, staff courteous and obliging. Everything cooked from fresh so not a fast food service. Cannot recommend highly enough this rapidly expanding and improving establishment.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

On Saturday we had a large family gathering at The Red Lion in upper Basildon .The occasion was my mother's 85 birthday .There were all ages in our large18 people gathering from teens up to 85.My mother specifically asked to go here,we have been for other birthday celebrations .When I booked the table Alison ( The landlady )was very accommodating in helping me make the arrangements as well as organizing a special menu. This saved us time on the day so that we didn't have to wait and we were able to choose at our leisure.
When we arrived the staff were very welcoming and helpful and couldn't have done more for us Our table was set out in a large room with a lovely french style decoration .

Thank you to all concerned for a lovely meal
The food was exceptional,we all enjoyed our meals
We couldn't have asked for a nicer day .
We also love the special mural in the ladies toilet of Mr Darcey (always a delight to see when we go )

“Terrible service”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

Rude staff, bit worrying when you hear management running down their customers in front of drinkers in the bar. Customers pay the bills don't they? The poor people of Upper Basildon have only one pub and this is it... Good food but poor service, if the management don't set an example to their staff what hope is there. Often go past here on a Friday night and it should be full and there only three tables dining, when are they going to learn that if you treat customers with respect and appreciation they will return. It is painfully slow to get served both a drink and a meal.
