“Great location. Unhelpful staff!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2014

Having stayed here before, we were delighted to have a free weekend to spend a weekend in Reading. On arriving to the hotel, your greeted with a lovely ambience. Queuing up, it took an unusual long time to be checked in. Once settled. We went out to reading and enjoyed shopping and some food and decided to spend our night in the hotel bar. We got back to our room to get ready and ventured down to reception. We were then horrified to see a dating night was taking place and was advised we could not go to the back area of the bar. This was not advised to us on entrance to the hotel. There was nowhere to sit so unhappily went to our room. The morning after we woke up to have a shower and discovered it was blocked and therefore we were unable to shower for the day. On checking out that morning and advising the staff of the blockage, we got a simple glare. No apology or offer of another room to have a shower. We then decided to have a few drinks in the bar before leaving to go home. Stood at the bar for 15 minutes before the unbusy receptionist came over. The staff are clearly unhappy and not once do you get a smile. What was to be a nice weekend away in a hotel we normally enjoy, it was ruined. We will not be returning to the hotel.

Dear Lee. Thank you for your feedback and my sincere apologies that you visit to us did not meet your expectations. We have indeed hosted an event which occupied just a small portion of our lovely, big pentalounge. I am also pleased to say it was a busy night in our bar with a fantastic buzz but I am sorry you couldn’t find a seat when you popped down. I am surprised with the way you have described how your maintenance concern was addressed. This is not the way we deal with things and I can only apologise if there was a misunderstanding there. I am however investigating this point to see if we need to carry out some re-training with one of our team members. I am also very surprised that you waited an entire quarter of an hour to get served a drink. Our bar and reception is one, integral structure as part of our centre-piece pentalounge meaning you can check-in and out in the same place you can order a crisp beer or one of our outstanding bar meals. Our teams are trained to facilitate this happening and I can assure you they are a happy bunch! I am sorry to hear you will not be returning and do hope you change your mind as I am sure with a few actions from your valuable feedback and with the fantastic things we are doing at the hotel we can give you a pretty awesome experience again.
Best wishes,
James Gardiner – Hotel Manager

Stayed with my other half in a standard double room. Absolutely fantastic hotel! Bed was enormous, room was spacious and relaxing. So close to town, excellent location as we went into the town for dinner and drinks in the evening. We then chose breakfast included in the morning for a very small amount extra and it was brilliant. Would definitely recommend this hotel for any type of stay. Excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely choose breakfast included if possible!

My boyfriend and I had our 1st date at the hotel bar here a year ago so decided to celebrate our anniversary by staying over.

The hotel is very nice despite being opposite the grim looking Travelodge at the start of the dodgy part of town. The bar area is great. It's funky (check out the great upside down wine glass chandelier) with the right volume of music and reasonably priced drinks. I can't comment on the food as I've never eaten here.

Our room was great value at just £54 for 1 night. It was large and clean. The bed was massive with 2 duvets which my boyfriend appreciated given my duvet hogging tendencies! The bathroom was quite small but I loved the rain shower and the cute bag of toiletries provided. The pay per view movies were free and we also had a 3pm check out that they were giving this weekend. It was lovely not having to set my alarm!

We went for a meal in the Oracle and returned to the hotel for some drinks in the bar where my boyfriend popped the question! The Penta will always have special meaning to us as our first date was here and we got engaged here. Maybe our wedding night should also be here!

If you want to stay in Reading in a good quality, reasonably priced hotel then you cannot go wrong with the Penta. It's close to the shops and restaurants in Reading and a 10 minute walk from the station.

A good hotel experience! Funky designs and atmospheric lobby/bar space give this place a plush and somewhat luxurious feel. Room was comfy, with the famous "huge" bed. Shower was "rainforesty" and with refreshing botanicals-like shower gels provided. Well located for an evening out in central Reading. Breakfast buffet was varied and generous and mighty popular! Good for a little people watching of the fellow clientelle too! Downside is parking which cost 20 pounds for 2 nights at a nearby parking garage.

My first visit to Pentahotel was also my last.

As a regular business traveller, being away from home 2-3 nights per week, I always try to avoid the large chains in favour of those a bit more individual. On beginning a a 6-12 month contract in Reading I booked into the Penta for my first week's visit.

When I arrived I was told that there were only smoking rooms left. (Do any other hotels still have smoking rooms?) I had booked a non-smoking room, which had been confirmed by email. The hotel receptionist, and the reception supervisor, couldn't have cared less and insisted that there were no non-smoking rooms available in the hotel.

I asked to see the manager, but he was not answering his mobile phone or walkie talkie. Six members of staff from across the hotel were drafted in to search for him - one of whom indicated that the manager being AWOL was not unusual.

While waiting I agreed to see the room I'd been allocated, and the reception supervisor accompanied me up there. When the lift doors opened onto the smoking floor the stench was like being hit in the face. It was slightly less pungent in the room, but the smell of smoke was still present and neither the supervisor nor I could open the window. She then asked if I'd like to be moved to the most exclusive suite, which was impressive but was also a smoking room and so it had exactly the same problem. Again, we couldn't open the windows. The thought of the health impact of spending the night in any of these rooms - or the thought of turning up to work the next day with the smoke smell having infused into all my clothes - was unbearable.

Thankfully, after nearly an hour the duty manager materialised. He instantly moved me to a non-smoking room. (I thought there were none available?). The room was tatty, dirty, with peeling paint, again non-opening windows, but at least it didn't stink like a fire at the Benson and Hedges factory.

It did have an unusual feature, which I'm sure many people would pay extra for - when I turned on the television, the channel defaulted to lesbian porn. And it looked like someone else was watching it, as it was pausing and rewinding. I got it onto News 24, but whenever I pressed the "menu" button on the tv, hoping to get a list of available tv and radio channels, the porn came back on. I am not technically savvy enough to know if anyone in the hotel would have access to a system that could accidentally replace the menu options with porn, or if any long absences from duty could be related.

If I need to find a positive, the bathroom (unlike the bedroom) was modern and spotlessly clean.

I asked the hotel to cancel my booking for the rest of the week without charge, and they obliged.

This hotel is a stain that the Reading hotel market can do without.

Dear StuckOnATrain. Thank you for posting your review about your experience. I am mortified to hear about your time with us. This is totally unlike our normal levels of service and I am therefore carrying out a full investigation into what happened. I can only apologise and hope that there is some reassurance that this is being comprehensively followed up and as you will see from the many extremely positive reviews about us, not indicative of what pentahotel Reading is all about. I would also appreciate the opportunity to speak to you in person so will send a message with my contact details and hope we get the chance to speak soon.
Best regards,

Modern and tastefully decorated, reception/bar area is like a niteclub with beautiful lighting and big sofas, the beds are massive, lovely bathrooms with good showers and the breakfast buffet was amazing.... best I've ever had!

Room Tip: I booked through Trivago so got 3 nights for 2 people B&B for £182. Bargain!
