“Convenient and good value let down by poor service at dinner”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

We've found this to be a convenient place to stop over when visiting my partner's son in Reading - just off the motorway and no problems with parking.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed at reception and found ourselves upgraded to an executive room which was nice. The chilled drink at reception was a particularly nice touch and appreciated after a long hot drive.

Once we'd arrived we didn't much feel like straying too far so after a freshen up and a quick dip in the pool we wandered down to the bar before dinner in the hotel restaurant (which my partner commented reminded her of the canteen at the college where she teaches).

Overall the level of service throughout the hotel was very good - friendly, efficient and with a smile. There did however seem to be a disconnect between the restaurant waiting staff and the kitchen staff over food orders and delivery (incorrect side-orders and steak wrongly cooked etc). To their credit, the waiting staff worked hard to put matters right - the quality of food and cooking (even after we'd been given the correct food) was however very average. Although our room rate suggested we were not going to experience haute cuisine, we were disssaponted with our evening meals.

Breakfast was much better - despite being very busy, the breakfast buffet was frequently replenished with freshly cooked food and the waiting staff were very good, busily clearing tables and still finding time to ask if we had enjoyed our breakfasts.

We'd normally rate this hotel as average but the friendliness of the staff and generally good service (kitchen service at dinner excepted) and the amount that we paid (£137.75 - had they made a mistake?), it would be churlish not to rate it as very good - we'll most likely return but for B&B only next time.

We stayed for one night with family in a group of seven ranging in ages from 21 to 84. It was our sons graduation from Reading University and we were made to feel very welcome by the staff. Check in was quick. The rooms a very good size and clean the beds very comfy. Breakfast lovely with so much to choose from and catering for all tastes. We will come back to this hotel its our second time and both times we have been given excellent service.

I've come to the conclusion that Holiday Inns, like Hilton, are generally over-rated places that ride on their reputation. If you stay at a Holiday Inn Express you know what you're going to get, but Holiday Inns are always a disappointment, and this fits that bill.

I have no idea why rooms were so expensive when I stayed but my one night here was the most expensive night I've ever had at a hotel (and I've stayed at some amazing places!).

I had no choice but to stay here and while it wasn't bad, I resent paying over £130 for such a basic hotel with virtually nothing included in that price. For that reason, it gets 2/5.

We have stayed in this hotel before, a couple of years ago and was very impressed with the hotel. We stayed there again for one night on the way home from holiday and was again pleased with the hotel. I really enjoyed staying there because the room was clean, the breakfast is tasty and the pool is relaxing, but most of all I like that the staff are so friendly and helpful.

Booked 6 nights here at Easter. Arrived Easter Sunday at around 12.20pm.. Ordered a light snack in bar while waiting for room.. After 35 minutes nothing appeared and thought the worst. Ted who was working apologised for delay and said this was not par for the course. After this genuine complaint we were brought to our room early and to our surprise found a nice bottle of wine with a written apology about the delay in the bar. In fairness this was an excellent touch.
After that we had a brilliant six days in the hotel where the staff were very friendly and the food decent. There is a lovely pool and gym on side and although on the small side was perfect. I will be back to stay without a doubt because there is a welcome here which so many other establishments like this lack.
Well done to this very atmospheric Holiday Inn.

I only stay here as its yards from my office - so its more of convenience than anything. Check-in/ reception can be a bit hit or miss. Quite often there will be two on reception, but only one checking people in, with the other doing something more important, without any acknowledgment you are there. annoying when you are tired, and just want to get checked in. The rooms are rather tired and the overall hotel is old, although the main lobby area is updated. Up until recently, wi-fi was chargeable - but is now free thank goodness. All in all, an OK hotel for one night, but that's about it. Never ever pay the normal rack rate, as you would be demanding your money back. At £75 a night, that's about its limits.

Room Tip: Try the fish and chip shop directly opposite the road. Delicious. Alternatively, a Morrison's is...

Dear The_H_Family_Bristol,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I am glad that you chose our location and liked our free WiFi service. On the other hand, it is disheartening that your experience at check in and the condition of our rooms fell below your standards. I would have preferred you had a more satisfying stay. Please be assured that your feedback is taken into account and will be used to improve our services.

I hope that you give us another chance to provide you with the best hotel experience in the future.

Sincerely,

Faith R

Good service, decent breakfast and clean rooms. Wasn't expecting much considering the low price but was pleasantly surprised. Can't comment on the bar or 'health spa' but they looked nice enough. Not bad.
