“Reasonable. But quite expensive. ”
Reviewed 2 March 2014 via mobile

Went here as a party of four. They were quite busy and service was slow at times. Luckily we were not in a rush. Food was quite nice, some small portions and quite expensive, we had tesco vouchers to use towards food which made good value. Would go again but not my first choice, and would need a voucher deal or promotion. Waiter was friendly. But had to get his attention at times to get drinks.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

We have been to a few Café Rouge in the past and we do feel that the quality of the food here is simply not good enough.

The set menus seemed attractive in terms of value for money but, once the food arrived, we were really disappointed with the quality which was average at best.

Also, the size of each desert in the trio of deserts was way too small. Small pots of crème brulee or other deserts would look cute but a quarter of a lemon meringue tart looked too small on the plate and it felt like the restaurant was trying to keep costs down!

Overall, not the best experience...

“Awful”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

Reading has several chain restaurants with horrible food and service, Cafe Rouge is one of them. Having been to this chain in other towns, and having eaten decent food in the past, we decided to treat ourselves to a dessert and drinks when visiting the Oracle. We should have gone elsewhere. The service was terrible. The restaurant was nearly empty, and even so the waiters were uninterested and unhelpful. My husband commented that the experience at Cafe Rouge was very authentic indeed, just like being in France. The sad excuse for a Tarte Tatin that was dumped on our table would make the sisters Tatin weep and wail. It had been reheated in a microwave, so the pastry and the apples were soggy, the apples were not caramelized and the whole thing tasted foul. The beer was served warm and the tea was a sachet dumped unopened in a teacup. Saying that our experience was very disappointing is an understatement. We obviously won't be returning.

“Lovely restaurant”
Reviewed 16 February 2014 via mobile

We have eaten at this restaurant a couple of times now. The food is really good, and the waiters/waitresses very attentive. We had a lovely meal for Valentines eve. We chose our meal from their Valentines menu and really enjoyed the food. The set price for a 3-course meal was £18.95 pp which I thought was good value considering that it was a special evening. The only minor gripe is that we were seated close to another couple and each time the man needed to leave his seat I had to move out of mine to allow him to move. The restaurant was busy that evening, but they still had some tables available, so with hindsight wished I had asked to be moved. Despite this we would definitely go back to eat again.
