Owner description: An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

“Lovely building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

We enjoyed our visit and the National Trust have done a good job with the way you are guided from one room to the other however many of the rooms are not open and we were inside the house under an hour which included an 10 minute introduction to the history of the house, which was very interesting. Lovely grounds as well.

Great house with handy picture folders in rooms used for filming Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice to name but a few. Loved it.
Cream tea nice too! Would definitely recommend.

“No where to walk - don't go up mead lane”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

It's about 45 mins walk from Pangbourne station and for a short section there is no pavement to walk on - careful of the traffic. The staff where friendly and the free tour was good. The large garden was mostly "natural" some large estates have themed gardens. It had some nice paintings

“Great house and grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

This house may be famous for its appearance in Pride and Prejudice but, it really is, so much more! The house is stunning and the grounds are even more perfect- definitely a place to take a long walk. Highly recommended.
