Having arrived at the Mercure George Hotel I had reasonable expectations of what to expect of this old 15th Century Coaching Inn made hotel. I have stayed in the Mercure Leeds Parkway and really liked the hotel there.
When I checked in Anna was very helpful and gave very professional service and instructions and set a good tone for my stay. Sadly this standard didn't continue.
I got into my room and the first thing I came across was the broken luggage stand, which was I acknowledge, swiftly replaced. Then you look into the bathroom and realise that you are almost having to climb over the toilet to get into the bath/shower. Not great. I even hit my foot of the toilet getting into the shower this morning!
The furniture is dated though going with a character hotel I suppose could be forgiven but I don't get a feeling of any atmosphere at all. There is no chique purpose to this furniture. It just looks like it's been thrown in.
It took me the best part of 20 minutes last night to set up a charge account and buy a beer.
The bed is also the softest I have ever lain on which will be a good thing for some people but not for me.
As anyone who has read my other revues will know, Shower pressure is a deal breaker for me. This shower never makes it above lukewarm and the pressure is poor, even when fluctuating between lukewarm and cold.
This morning the cooked breakfast was again lukewarm and not hot and the selection is one of the worst I have seen in a hotel in some months. The member of staff who showed me the breakfast room and where the buffet breakfast was, was wearing his coat. No idea why! Cooked breakfast costs £12.50 per day here. Total rip off for quality of what you get and selection available. Premier Inn does it better for £8.00 odd per day.
The wifi at least is a small saving grace as it is free and the connection speed is good. There is also a fridge in the room which when you travel as often as I do can be good to be able to put some juice or milk in it. This isn't enough to encourage me to re-book though. Sorry.
This entire hotel needs significant investment in the repair and relaying of floorboards in the hall, water pressure and furniture.
Anna and Daniel on reception are very good but really have been the stand out two from the rest of the service I have received which hasn't been great.
There are other and better hotels in the area for the price.
