“A Disgrace to Mercure - Terrible Terrible Terrible”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

Mecure should be ashamed of this disgraceful hotel. I barely want to spend time writing this but feel i have to to save others the misfortune.

Hotel - It isn't ye olde or quaint. Its run down, dirty, noisy and hot.
Staff - When I complained about the heat the woman on reception told me that i'd need to wait for a fan because she is the only member of staff working at the hotel. 6pm on a weekday !!!!
Room - Poor wifi, no aircon, tiny, open window and it's incredibly noisy. dirty, rundown (see photos)
TV - Worked 50% of time at best. they even have a sign telling you what to do when it loses reception. I DONT WANT A SIGN I WANT A WORKING TV
Fridge - an old fridge just sitting on the carpet under desk where your feet and legs are supposed to be... this is ULTRA ULTRA BUDGET
Bed - didnt sleep a wink, aside from the heat the matress was terrible and duvet cover had a burn mark

Bathroom - uncleaned, dirty, mouldy, hot.. stinks of damp

AND would they change my room ? NO NO NO NO NO. Wouldnt even entertain the discussion.. disgusting Mercure !!

Enjoy photos..

Room Tip: just dont stay there

My son and I stayed at the George for one night after a great day sightseeing in London on the 31st of May and where more than happy with the room and service we where given and as for the breakfast it was great and set us up for a day at legoland.Would def.stop at this hotel anytime we are back down south.

Enjoyed a very nice weekend at The George Hotel in Reading recently. The room was very spacious and had all the facilities l needed. It is located right in the Main Shopping Area so in a very good place to stay. The en-suite was very nice and the breakfast was sufficient.

Room Tip: I stayed on the ground floor in the new block. Very quiet.

The hotel is advertised as located in the oldest building in Reading, And this comes with the few advantages and all of the disadvantages.
So if you want to take a journey back in time that's the place to do it. It certainly has a "charm" of an old place but also lacks some of the modern day facilities like a lift or air-conditioning. Finding your room may also be quite tricky - the corridor is a real maze.
The room was quite nice but the the floor was crooked - higher towards the wall and lowering towards the center of the room. You don't have to drink anything to feel dizzy in the room.
The best thing is the location. The very center of Reading on a pedestrian street right next to the Oracle shopping mall. Few steps away from lots of shops, pubs and restaurants.

Not much choice at breakfast. Full English breakfast is served but almost nothing more than that. And also the worst coffee ever served is there!! Just go and get it from the coffee machine.

Room Tip: Don't ever under *any* circumstances drink the coffee at breakfast!

What a great experience we have just had staying at this hotel! There was an issue on arrival with housekeeping not being able to make additional bed up in our room – no problem! The staff immediately addressed the situation by providing us with an alternative at no additional cost or effort to us!

I have to specifically point out that the lady on Reception (Kristina?) was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble and the customer service we experienced was simply superb.

We had room service in the evening and breakfast the following Morning - the food was excellent on both occasions and the members of staff were excellent!

The ONLY reason that I haven’t given 5 out of 5 for sleep quality as there was a little noise outside from night time revellers in the Town Centre - but this is certainly not the Hotel's fault!

I would certainly stay at the George Hotel again and would whole heartedly recommend it to other travellers for whatever purpose.

Well Done Everyone!!
