Lovely little café for a spot of lunch, every time I've eaten here I've had really nice food, efficient friendly service, great to eat at somewhere that's a little different, highly recommended:)

“Lovely independent for coffee or lunch”
Reviewed 10 June 2013 via mobile

So nice to find an independent place in Reading. Lovely soups and salad boxes (or eat in) and great cakes and sandwiches. Quite a small space to take a buggy but generally find space. There's usually interesting artwork and posters for upcoming events.

“I love Picnic :-)”
Reviewed 14 May 2013

I popped in this week and realised I hadn't yet reviewed Picnic which is a shame as it's my favourite cafe in Reading. This visit didn't disappoint, I had salad box 1 which was butternut squash and hummus with a coffee and an almond macaroon. The salad is fab, really filling and gorgeously flavoursome too. It was busy but I got a table and the staff delivered my order quickly... Definitely this week's treat :-) Please open in Caversham!

Great coffee, great cake, great salads and lovely staff. What more can you ask for? Why would you think of going to one of the nearby coffee shops.

“This will convince you that Reading isn't 'Clone Town'!”
Reviewed 28 April 2013

Reading's town centre has a reputation for being all chain stores and restaurants - of course this isn't altogether true, it has lots of locally-owned independents and as far as coffee shops go, this one is the business.

Located in the Butter Market just off busy Broad Street, this small café with its quirky decor and friendly, welcoming staff is is the perfect place to sit and relax over a cup of their excellent coffee. Place your order, take your seat and they will happily bring it to you. They also have a range of teas, and cold drinks are available in the fridge. Their home-made sandwiches, salads and cakes are a delight. They also have papers you can read - or have a leaf through their copy of 'The Maiwand Lion', the first novel of a local man - he spent hours in Picnic writing or looking for inspiration. On a nice day, you can also sit at the outside tables and watch the world (well, Reading) go by. They do take-away too, if you must.

A nice touch too - there's free tap water in a jug in the fridge, you can help yourself.

They also do outside lunch catering, and have another outlet at the Reading Climbing Wall.
