“Tranquility and luxury near Henley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

Between the gridlocked barren waste land of Reading and the bucolic English villages of Henley and Hurley lies an idyllic B&B called Setters Barn. Only 12 miles from Henley it is wonderful accommodation to take in the Henley Season (Nick will tell you about the secret route leading to 15 pound parking!!). The garden room is huge, with the most fantastic king sized bed, a separate sitting area, a spotlessly clean bathroom with the most enormous fluffy towels and a view of a pleasant golf course quality lawn with rabbits frolicking in the late evening. For breakfast, you walk across the lawn to the gourmet 4-oven kitchen staffed by ‘executive chef’ Nick who will in a matter of moments create a wonderful full English breakfast to your exact specifications – having been up since 5am baking bread! Louise takes care of the coffee, toast, juice etc. They will give you dining recommendations to amazing country pubs in the immediate vicinity. (we particularly enjoyed The Crooked Billet in Stoke Row). Whether you are wanting to recover from jet lag after arriving at Heathrow (only 30 miles), wanting to “do” Henley or explore the stately homes featured in Downton Abbey (Basildon Park, Highclere) – you can do no better than to stay in Setters Barn. You arrive as a guest and leave as a friend.

Room Tip: Get the Garden room - it is the bigger of the two.

After a long international flight who wants to wake up in some crummy hotel by a motorway near Heathrow? We wanted to wake up in the tranquil English countryside and hoped Setters Barn would be the perfect place. It truly was. It's an easy drive from Heathrow -- Nick has excellent instructions -- and the barn is cosy, welcoming, with super comfortable beds. A first rate breakfast made this an ideal way to arrive in the UK. Warmly recommended by two weary but grateful travellers.

we had booked Setters Barn for a couple of nights but unfortunately had to shorten our stay. the one night we did have there was excellent . the location is so peaceful and we were made to feel very welcome by Nick and Louise ( and the dogs !). the room we had was tastefully decorated and furnished .After a good nights sleep in a huge and comfortable bed we had a wonderful breakfast cooked by Nick. we would definitely stay again ( hopefully for longer !) and would recommend Setters Barn as an excellent place to stay and use as a base for seeing the beautiful countryside and villages in the area.

Found by chance for a weekend away from it all. It totally lived up to our expectations . Beautiful location,Nic and Louise were perfect hosts, everything we needed was on hand and nothing was too much trouble for them. The room was so comfortable and totally peaceful. Great food recommendations locally and a great breakfast in their lovely kitchen . Off the beaten track but well worth every minute. We will certainly be returning.

I booked a long weekend with Setters Barn after looking for somewhere local to stay when my partner and I visited the local Wolf Sanctuary in Beenham. Setters Barn was the first place to come up on Trip Advisor and my other half and I cannot wait to go back! We were lucky with the weather which made the whole trip more memorable. Nick and Louise (and their two beautiful dogs, Toffee and Tizzy) gave us a genuine warm welcome. I highly recommend the Garden Room for the bed alone! As a long-term insomniac, I have honestly never slept so well in many years, the bed is just divine! Breakfast was beautifully cooked by Nick, we opted for the full-cooked each day, it was our holiday after all. The garden is huge and filled with beautiful flowers, plants, herbs and veg and a great area to get out the picnic blanket. Plenty of bunnies to spot at the bottom of the garden!
We arranged to have a bottle of champers on ice and some chocolates ready for when we arrived at a small cost which surprised my partner.
You can drive to several towns from the location of Setters Barn, we visited both Marlow and Henley which are stunning towns. Nick and Louise have both got plenty of great recommendations for places to visit. There are plenty of pubs within a short drive too for evening meals etc.
The one thing that would have made a huge difference to us would have been if there was a small fridge/microwave to store/cook food, as when we came back in the evening after our days out, unless we drove to a local eatery, there wasn't much option to eat in and relax. Nevertheless, we decided to eat larger lunches to keep us ticking over until breakfast the next morning.
The photos on here don't do the place justice, the Garden Room was huge with a beautiful bathroom, really cosy decor and the Sky box made a big difference for us both as we're huge film lovers! Nick and Louise have a small collection of DVDs if you want a chilled day in or are avoiding rainy days out.
Nick and Louise made the stay, really. Both incredibly welcoming and such a lovely couple.
The views round Setters Barn are to die for and I highly recommend going for walks further up the lane, some beautiful locations close by.
We cannot wait to go back when we visit the Wolf Sanctuary again!!

Just spent a few days visiting family and friends and decided on Setters Barn. We can't thank Nick & Louise enough for their more than warm welcome and wished we could have stayed longer. The location and setting were wonderful and the accommodation, although not huge, had everything just right, fluffy towels, nice linen and a bed that was out of this world. I've always suffered from back trouble and always dread sleeping in strange beds but couldn't believe how well I felt in the morning and could quite happily have stayed there all day!
The cooked breakfast was great and sorry Nick, I'll try your home made soda bread next time.
We have already booked two more visits and would highly recommend staying with this delightful couple and everything they have to offer.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay over the Easter break. Nick and Louise made us feel extremely welcome - such a lovely couple. I would highly recommend Setters Barn to all my friends and family. We will definitely visit again soon. Darren & Georgina from Fareham in Hampshire.
