“Anniversary treat”
Reviewed 12 September 2012

Stayed with the Mrs for our anniversary, a last minute call and a good one. Very friendly welcome, both for myself and my wife (we arrived individually). This included an excellent valet service (the place would struggle without, there is no nearby parking) and being escorted to the room.

The room was nicely appointed, nice big comfy bed and an ace walk-in shower. Free wifi which is good, hotels that charge in this day and age are off!

Had a few cocktails in the bar (good bar service) and then headed out for dinner. Carluccio's is next door.

We paid £180 for the room, but didn't really shop around and booked a few days in advance.

A lovely stay.

Room Tip: We had room 17, not much of view, but nice and quiet.

Stayed here on Saturday night (11th Aug 2012). Very difficult to find by car, as main access road to hotel is closed off for long term road works, but no mention of this on the hotel website. Staff very helpful, hotel and rooms of very high standard. However stay was spoilt by the lack of air conditioning. Stayed on top floor with windows open wide all night so had to endure the hourly chimes of a nearby clock tower! Room was so hot that sleep was impossible! Such a shame! Breakfast was great and again staff were first class. I would imagine that winter stays when the road closure is removed would be great!!!!

It is well deserving of its number one status. We booked the hotel through Late Rooms and it was very relaxing. The hotel is set back from the main town on a quiet hill next to a park. It is a little awkward to get to presently due to some work on the one way system but do persist! The hotel valet parked our car, from the room view the car park is around the back of the hotel, but how to get there is beyond me. However they are more than helpful and will put any luggage in/out as well as driving the car back to the front of the hotel. We left our car here from 2pm on check in day until 3pm the next day, whilst we went shopping. The charge for this was £12.

The hotel itself is a beautiful listed building, which has been converted into a 23 room hotel. When we arrived a wedding was in full flow and there was a gentleman playing a grand piano in the Foyer. The entire reception area is opulent and yet comfortable as well. There is a wonderful floor to ceiling glass beaded chandlier set in what was the old cage lift shaft of the building (think continental style lifts). There is a lot of art and style throughout the hotel and nothing is bland! All the staff where friendly and efficient without being overbearing.

The room itself was very large, with a comfortable king size bed and separate seating area. There is a Bang and Olufsen system which plays the TV or music throughout the room and also if you wish, in the bathroom too (press the red dot to turn it off). The hotel provides cds and DVD's for you to watch. It was a little stuffy when we first arrived but this improved once the windows were opened. We left the windows open all night and there was very little noise. The bathroom is extremely large, with a massive bath (easily big enough for two large people) and walk in deluge style shower. The room has lots of nice little touches, the styling and art, wallpaper, curtains, strange bronze animals (is it a swan or a monkey we mused) as well as the everyday stuff like books, fresh milk, robes and slippers and postcards and pens.

The hotel is within a five minute walking distance of the main town centre. The town centre itself is vibrant and opening late for summer and the Oracle is worth a look. We did not eat at the hotel in the evening but headed to Riverside instead where there is a selection of restaurants and a cinema. We did have breakfast at the hotel and my husband commented on how well cooked the breakfast was, no burnt bits, everything cooked just right and not swimming in grease. I had two perfectly soft boiled eggs. There is a continental style buffet as well.

If you want to stay in the heart of Reading in a beautiful hotel, you can't go wrong with The Forbury.

From our arrival at the hotel, where we were greeted with smiles and a "happy to help" attitude, right up until the time we left, we loved this hotel.

All of the public rooms are beautifully appointed, as was our bedroom. Every little detail is included. Fresh milk for a cup of tea and complimentary water are always a great touch :-)

The location is also superb. Five minutes walk takes you into the busy town of Reading, however the hotel is tucked away and therefore a great spot to escape all the hubbub!

If I had one comment to make, it would be that the room we had was not very female oriented. There was no dressing table and I therefore had to position a chair in front of the mirrored wardrobe in order to dry my hair. A very small detail and maybe not the case in every room.

Dinner in Cerise was lovely, as was the freshly cooked breakfast that we had the next morning.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel!!

Room Tip: If you are female, maybe ask for a room with a dressing table!

From walking through the door and seeing beautiful opulent décor and to be greeted by such helpful staff. We used their parking facilities, so valet parking provided.

We didn't eat in the evening, however the breakfasts were very good, full english the one morning, excellent and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon the following, equally as good.

The bedroom was amazing with a beautiful stone bath.

The only thing I was a bit disappointed with - had to have a bath as it was so beautiful, no bath smellies.

2nd stay did not disappoint. Staff are excellent, decor is wonderful, rooms really well done and breakfast is yummy. The only thing I would change is to put air con in rooms. Would definitely stay again. Really good VFM have paid a lit more to stay in worse.

We stayed here on 21st July 2012. I cannot fault it, from the moment we entered the hotel there was someone who offered to park our car and carry our bags, and the receptionist was helpful and friendly. The room was luxurious, we had a junior suite and there were touches like fresh milk in the fridge, scales in the bathroom, notelets & envelopes, cd's, DVD, magazines & slim books, clothes brush and shoe horn, slippers and dressing gowns etc.

The bed and pillows were very comfortable, our room was at the front of the hotel and we slept with the windows open but the road in front was a very quiet one with no traffic on it and a park on the other side so we weren't disturbed by noise.

We ate in the dining room. The food was fantastic and the staff were friendly and attentive.

We filled in the card to have breakfast sent up to our room, it was beautifully presented and tasty and there was plenty of it.

Overall, it's the best hotel I've ever stayed in, and I think you get value for money.
