Surprise weekend arranged by family for my 65th birthday. Beautiful hotel, excellent service, could not do more for us. Wonderful family lunch on Sunday - food could not be faulted. Staff very efficient and attentive - went out of their way to make our stay perfect. Would highly recommend this hotel not only for excellent service and attention to detail but within walking distance of good range of shops and restaurants in Reading town centre. Would certainly visit again. And many thanks for my wonderful family for arranging such a treat! Sue Morris 7th/8th September 2013.

Just returned from an 11-day stay in a two-bedroom flat, the sister property to the hotel, attached at the back of the property. The location was excellent within easy walking distance to the shops and train station. Also the layout of the flat was great, two-bedroom, two and half bathrooms. Nice to have the space while travelling as a family of four.

On the downside though the flat was very poorly equipped. Only 4 small mismatched plates, a few bowls and cups, one bread knife etc. I felt like I was constantly having to call the reception at the hotel to ask for basic items to be provided. Why don't they do an inventory before the guests arrive - this was very annoying. For example, I was told by reception that there was only one bread knife because guests kept stealing the other knives....within an hour or two though they did delivery a new knife set that looked like they just ran out an bought it. We tend to stay in flats or cottages while we are travelling as it is more convenient so I know what to expect when renting a self catering flat and this was very much lacking. Although the staff were responsive when we called it was so frustrating to realize you needed something and have to call and wait for it to be delivered, if they were able to. I soon just gave up and made do.

Also there are two bathrooms with showers in the property but we soon discovered you couldn't have two showers going at the same time as it stopped the water going on in one of the showers. I mentioned this to the reception and she said that they most likely wouldn't be able to fix this as it was a much bigger issue.

Another issue which perhaps is a building issue is all the doors made a really loud click sound everytime the doors closed. It was impossible to close a door without this noise as there was something in the hinges that made this loud click. Very disturbing when the family was sleeping and we were trying to get over our jetlag so up at different hours.

Finally in the main bedroom there were only three tiny drawers although there was ample space for them to have provided a proper dresser. We ended up living out of our suitcases for 11 days.

I would stay here if convenient but don't have high expectations for the property.

Stayed for one night on Sunday during Reading Festival, found an amazing rate on Mrandmrssmith.
On checking in our car was parked for us however if I had not asked prior to our arrival if there was a charge to park the car we would have thought it was free as they did not mention until we paid upon check out that there was a fee which was a bit naughty.
We were in room 28 which is absolutely stunning, the bedroom was beautiful clean and of a good size and then bathroom was incredible the huge shower and bath were beautiful.
The facilities within the room were fantastic we loved the nepresso machine and all the different flavors of tea were great, even the little fridge with milk and water
When we arrived back to our room very late our bed had been turned down and water was placed on either side of the bed. We did not have breakfast included so cannot comment on the food however the hotel was beautiful and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: We were in a corner room and heard no noise at all room 28 was stunning.

My husband booked an early, teenager free, weekend away to celebrate our anniversary. We booked the two night relaxing break with champagne in the room, dinner bed and breakfast on the first night and bed and breakfast on the second night.
On checking in, our car was parked for us and the receptionist left reception to show us to our room on the first floor - a nice touch.
The hotel interior is stunning with a crystal chandelier running the full height of the building through the old lift shaft and lots of comfy areas to sit and relax.
The room was beautifully furnished and I was pleased to find a deep bath in the bathroom as well as a separate rainforest shower. There was a top end sound system in the room, which you could also set to play in the bathroom. A selection of DVDs and CDs were provided along with lots of books and magazines. There was a nespresso machine for coffee and a kettle for tea. Complimentary fizzy and still water were supplied.
Dinner was fantastic and the service amazing. My husband is still raving about the freshwater trout on squid ink linquine with a clam sauce. We had a pre dinner cocktail at the bar first where Jonathan, Josh and Dean made us feel very welcome. The cocktail menu is vast - a real treat. We also went back there for after dinner drinks.
Breakfast the next day was a treat with a buffet with fresh tropical fruit salad, a selection of fresh juices, organic yoghurts, cereals, nuts, seeds, pastries. Hot food was ordered from the menu and included smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, kippers as well as the traditional full english.
We decided to explore Reading on foot and found a really interesting museum close to the hotel which had a full replica of the Bayeux Tapestry which was stitched in the UK in the 1890s, as well as lots of fascinating local history.
Enroute we spotted a restaurant called The Lobster Room, which tempted my husband away from a second night of eating at the hotel. Will review that separately.
Back to the hotel for more cocktails - the bar was quite busy on Saturday night, but didn't impact on the brilliant, personal service.
This break was truly relaxing due to the incredibly helpful staff and the lovely surroundings. It was very quiet on the Friday night and I hope people start ot make use of this beautiful hotel as would be such a shame to lose it!

Stayed the night on one if their romance breaks (Sunday night) which was good value.

Started well - couple of emails to confirm parking and dinner were responded to quickly be reception - much appreciated.

Valet parking on check in (albeit costing £12).

Iovely room with champagne chilling!! Went down for dinner - restaurant and bar was very quiet but then it was a sunday night. Good service and great food. Was able to eat "off of" the set menu and take a credit against the a la carte.

Only complaint would be the room got very warm at night despite window being open - prob due to the thick curtains (which do good job of blocking out noise and light). PS though it was a Sunday night I was still pleasantly surprised about how quiet it was - the hotel is only a couple of minutes from town but far enough not to hear the drunks!!

Great for couples wanting a romantic weekend - the rooms can be pricey but most of individually designed. Nice food options in restaurant and near by also. We had a room with an old fashioned copper bath and plenty of space
