“The perfect getaway”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

I treated my partner to a night away at The Forbury Hotel for her birthday and it was just perfect.

I managed to book a package including a bottle of champagne in the room, chocolates, dinner for us and a night. At just shy of £300 it was worth every penny. Upon arrival, the receptionist/concierge parked the car and gave us our room key, mentioning we had received an upgrade. The room was on the second floor and it was pretty special. A huge bathroom, kingsize bed and seating area with nice little touches around the room.

Dinner in Cerise was delightful. A great extensive wine list and the menu catered to our tastes. The Goats Cheese fondue is a delightfully strange desert and worth a try. Breakfast was also of a good standard with hot items cooked to order and a fresh continental buffet laid out.

I'm not sure when we will have the chance to return, but its a firm favourite of ours now.

Room Tip: It appears most rooms overlook the Forbury courtyard so rooms are quiet and away from the road.

Loved this hotel which is conveniently located in the center of Reading. The rooms are really nice, and large for a European hotel. The bathroom was very, very nice with a beautiful soaking tub and fantastic shower.

I had another enjoyable stay at what is probably the best hotel in Reading.
Lovely room with B&O TV and Hifi system. Attention to detail everywhere.
Lovely comfortable bed which I slept very well in.
The ambience of this hotel is wonderful and if you need to stay in Reading I thoroughly recommend it.

First things first, this is a stunning hotel. The rooms are lovely, the bathrooms perfect, the service exemplary.

The breakfast was outstanding, delivered to our room with no tray charge, which makes a nice change.

The only problem that I had was that the room was far too warm. Admittedly it was an unseasonably warm weekend when we stayed, but the lack of any sort of temperature control in the room means you are rather at the mercy of somebody else's idea of a pleasant temperature. Due to this we had to sleep with the windows open which meant a poor nights sleep due to the traffic noise and people out in the town center. Worth bearing in mind if, like me, you prefer a cool hotel room in which to get a good nights sleep.

Just a 5 minute walk from Reading Station, The Forbury is next to the Forbury Gardens & the Abbey ruins. The brochure tells you it was built in 1911 as the Shire Hall for Berkshire County Council & is a Grade 1 listed building, & you can certainly still admire the historic detailing with the wide Purbeck marble hallways and high vaulted ceilings.

The reception staff were very pleasant, experienced & hospitable. On your way to your room, don't miss the chandelier which runs the height of the old lift shaft - apparently it has 86,000 Italian glass beads! The atmosphere is fashionable & everywhere is stylishly decorated, the blend of fabrics & wallpaper with clever lighting, artworks & design create a space that looks & feels really special.

My room was no.16 and it was stunning with an under-heated walnut floor, sawn oak furniture, lovely soft furnishings & a comfy 4 poster bed. The room also had a state-of-the-art Bang & Olufsen audio-visual system, an espresso coffee machine & a fridge stocked with complimentary water. In the bathroom the bath was spacious and there was also a monsoon shower with luxury fixtures & fittings (although the sink tap wouldn't stop dripping), a stone floor & romantic lighting. Oh and Molton Brown Smellies! Overall a lovely experience & next morning I went downstairs and sank into a comfy sofa with a hot chocolate while waiting for my train. And relax............
