“Barely met my expectations”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

So the positives:

- its cheap
- the shower was hot and powerful
- the cooked breakfast was good
- the pub seemed nice
- its central

And the negatives
- carpet was stained all over
- the bed was almost unbearably lumpy
- the tv didn't work
- the wifi barely work
Generally the room decor was very tired and it badly needs a refurbish.

If you can tollerate a lumpy bed, it was just about ok for the price.

This hotel has 4 assets: beautiful facade, great cooked breakfasts, biscuits and free wi-fi.
Now for the bad bits. Don't expect the room to be cleaned much, towels don't get changed, TV remote control keys are dirty and the walls are so thin you can hear your neighbours snoring. Oh, and the pub can get noisy which you will also hear.

If your expectations aren't great, you will be fine here.

Great Expectations is a themed pub and hotel in the centre of Reading. My wife and I stayed there for the weekend. Our room (16) had a four poster bed and ensuite with a bath big enough for two..... The pub underneath serves good range of real ales which is my preferred tipple and although we only had the breakfasts, the menu looked good too. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and attentive.

This hotel is in the town centre, above a pub and on a main road, so it's not the quietest location, but sleep was not disturbed. There is no parking and the nearest car park cost £15 overnight, but the train station is only a 10 minute walk away.

The room cost £116 for two nights B&B and that was good value, compared to other hotels in the area. (We paid £140 for room only at Pangbourne in February)

We'd go back to Great Expectations again.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear would be quieter, but for space go for one at the front.

Cut off from the centre of the town by a busy bypass, Great Expectations was nonetheless handy for my overnight.
Check-in at the far end of the bar space - clearly this is a busy bar of the JDW variety. Friendly, efficient welcome, and a room which was fine, though less interesting than the rest of the building might lead one to suppose.
Good breakfast in the bar area, which is done up like a Dickensian street, with little shop areas, but also television news !

To start with, the main check-in area isn't too visible, so you have to go through the bar and then there's a tiny window at the end where you can check-in. However, the staff were very helpful and friendly.
Positives:
- Good price
- Central location
- Old decor yet modern rooms
- Friendly staff
- Nice ale's at bar
- HD TV
- Nice breakfast

Negatives:
- Beds are not too comfy
- Kettle was dirty
- WiFi has a bad connection (on top floor anyway)

On the whole I would recommend this hotel only for the likes of an overnight stay or a short business trip.

Room Tip: Would recommend room on lower floor as there is 3 flights of stairs if on top floor.

Good things:
- Just 2 minutes walking from the main pedestrian street of the city.
- Full English breakfast is good.
- Full bathroom new and clean.
- Heating works perfectly.
- The hotel is very nice on the outside.
- Nice and helpful staff.

Bad Things:
- The mattress is horrible (at least mine). It is very soft and old. The iron wires dig into your back.
- There is no lift in the hotel and has twoo floors. The stairs are steep and difficult to carry luggage to the room if you are on the second floor.
- Wifi in my room was slow and choppy (Second floor) . Fortunately you can go to the groundfloor where is the restaurant - pub - library, where wifi is good and you don´t need to consume and pay anything to be there.
- It is a bit noisy on the weekends at night because the ground floor of the hotel is a pub-restaurant.

Got a pretty good rate here which is always going to colour any review. Everything worked in the room. I was on the third or fourth floor and the music thumped away loudly until midnight.

Breakfast was pretty good and the staff were friendly. The building has some lovely rooms and features but the hotel is essentially a pub with rooms situated next to the ringroad.

However, it was cheap and I got what I paid for - no complaints but I won't be spending my honeymoon here and would probably seek out an alternative next time I am in Reading...
