“Unique Hotel”

The front of this hotel looks quite grand from the outside and when you step inside the bar area its done out like a Dickensian street with lots of different alcoves and areas to sit in very unusual and quite well done. The hotel reception is at the far end of the bar when you get your key retrace your steps to the front entrance and the hotel part is accessed through the double doors on your left. The room (Room 17) was very large with a fourposter bed,TV,Wardrobe,Sofa,Tea& coffee making things and a good sized bathroom with a double bath which was great for us to soak in together after a our Thames path walk from Cholsey. The breakfast was good and the hotel staff friendly. The location is good for the shops and night life. We enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Room 17 is large with a double bath and fourposter bed.

Great Expectations is a themed pub with a hotel above the pub section. It is in the heart of Reading's nightlife (the Kennett Riverside/Vue Cinema/Oracle are just opposite) and offers clean accommodation at budget prices. The showers are equipped with massage head, which is a real treat after a day in meetings.
The downside, this is not a place to stay, if you need peace and quiet to prepare for meetings. There are three live music venues around you and Saturdays gives a new meaning to the term "Battle of the Bands". But if you are after the nightlife, than this is where you should be. The pub/restaurant offers Burgers in several varieties and a good range of beers on draught.

Room Tip: Room 2 will expose you to music from three directions on the weekend.

The biggest plus about this hotel was the cheap rate, £38 for a single room including breakfast. So for a trip involving London on the way back this was far more economical than a London hotel. I can only think of Premier Inn as offering anything cheaper. Room was plain and a bit scruffy but bed was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep, It's not luxury but not at all bad, I've paid much more for worse accommodation (typically in London). Bar downstairs has cask ales although also had an annoying disco on Saturday night which jarred a bit with the olde worlde Dickens theme. Fortunately the noise didn't carry to my room and anyway it stopped at midnight. Breakfast was good, didn't need lunch. Convenient location close to train station, bars, shops and restaurants. I thought this was a great deal.

Room Tip: I was OK on 1st floor but try to get a room away from the disco

This is a lovely pub with a nice atmosphere.

The Dickens theme was great, and the longer you spent there, the more quirks you spot, although I did nearly leap out of my skin when I saw the Dickens mannequin!

I didn't spend the night there, but it is certainly a nice place to sit and chat with friends. What was really nice is that the music wasn't too loud where we were sat, and therefore didn't have to shout to be heard.

Great location for visiting the Uni campus. Desperate for some work doing especially our room No 18. Carpet stained, decor tatty and tired.

Handy for the city centre, large carpark opposite £15 for 24hrs

This has the potential to be a half decent hotel but it's obvious the owners are happy to run it as cheaply as possible and bank the money instead of investing in the property.

Pros: location is superb, the breakfast

Cons: no lift, reception is at the back of a bar, the bar, low on staff numbers, no phone in the rooms, no wakeup facility, the decor is old and worn, you have to share a table at breakfast if the place is full.

I would have to question the positive reviews on this site about the hotel.
