“Sad one cannot visit”

Extraordinary history but unfortunately no restoration/protection of the structures have been funded to make the site secure for tourists to be able to get inside the grounds and view this important historical site. Very sad site has such historical relevance to the area/region. Henry VIII revenge lives on

“A Testament To Time - Built by Henry I and destroyed by Henry VIII”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2013

Built almost 1000 years ago...the fact that any of it remains blows my mind. Walking through the ruins you can picture the structure of how it once looked. There are drawings and paintings of the beauty. To see the heart and soul poured into building it...and then the hatred that destroyed it...some 400 years later. I am not a religious person...nor really a spiritual one..but to touch the walls, and walk the grounds, I could feel the energy that once was here.

If you are in the area...or even if you are not - take the time to explore the ruins and grounds that are here.

“Closed until further notice”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2013

I was really looking forward to visiting the remains of Reading Abbey, so was very disappointed to discover when I got there that the site has been 'temporarily' closed since 2009. You can peer through the gates for a limited view, and there are a few explanatory signs telling you what you're looking at, but it's mostly inaccessible and with no indication of when it will open again. A great pity.

“Hidden away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2013

I'd seen the ruins lots of times from Forbury Gardens but never went to see them until recently. They were partly shut off but there was still enough to see, and we ended up discovering Reading gaol too. Not quite Stone Henge but definitely worth a look if you're passing by.

“Us mere idiots are not allowed in.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2013 via mobile

Unfortunately when we got there it was all shut off, and it was a case again of the so called authorities in historic places ruining it for the public and restricting the British to their own history in the name of the idiocy of "health and safety " which eventually will happen to all the historic sites in the UK. And it will if the greedy companies like English heritage get thier way. Why not put up a sign warning of falling rocks and let the public decide. Fed up of being treated like idiot kids.
