“Closed off, and falling down anyway.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 September 2013

Situated between a prison, a park, and a canal, this abbey was clearly destroyed a long time ago. The ruins are a small part of it, with the rest being under the prison.
It's been closed off for years now, since it's still in the process of falling down.

You're not missing much anyway, though. Having seen it before it was fenced off, it's just a few flint walls, a single room, and no roof.
Bits of it can be found in walls all over town, however, with the roof having been transplanted to the nearby church.

“Pointless attraction inaccessible and covered in scaffolding”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2013

Do not bother even trying to get access to this. the whole area is inaccessible and in dire need of urgent attention. the canal walk is pretty which is about as close as you will get to this.

“Sad”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

Sadly as others say this is not one you can visit. All locked away and no where you can really see anything over the fence. Was supprise to see this so close to the centre of Reading. Lets hope that some restores so other get to have a look. The Forbury park close by is quite nice to just sit in and there is one part of the abbey you can see the abbey gate (next to the park). Sadly lots of ugly barriers up at the moment but something you can get to see.

“Sad one cannot visit”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2013 via mobile

Extraordinary history but unfortunately no restoration/protection of the structures have been funded to make the site secure for tourists to be able to get inside the grounds and view this important historical site. Very sad site has such historical relevance to the area/region. Henry VIII revenge lives on

“A Testament To Time - Built by Henry I and destroyed by Henry VIII”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2013

Built almost 1000 years ago...the fact that any of it remains blows my mind. Walking through the ruins you can picture the structure of how it once looked. There are drawings and paintings of the beauty. To see the heart and soul poured into building it...and then the hatred that destroyed it...some 400 years later. I am not a religious person...nor really a spiritual one..but to touch the walls, and walk the grounds, I could feel the energy that once was here.

If you are in the area...or even if you are not - take the time to explore the ruins and grounds that are here.
