“Lovely modern hotel with northern hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2011

We stayed at the Rutland in November 2010 whilst visiting my daughter who is studying at Sheffield Hallam University.
Loved the rooms, ultra modern with quirky wallpaper frieze above the headboard. The breakfast was very substantial english breakfast, no paper thin bacon here and the breakfast staff were extremely friendly and welcoming.
The only thing we could mark them down on was that the knob was missing on the thermostat on the heating/aircon in our room which meant we could not regulate the heat and it was very noisy through the night, something they must have been aware of.
Other than that, great hotel and would not hesitate to use next time.

We held our wedding at the Rutland in November. I can't fault the staff at the hotel and our guests, a number of who stayed at the hotel, also commented how friendly and helpful the staff are. The food served in the restaurant is delisious with a good menu to chose from. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated in a contemporary style, some reviews mention them being dark so if you preffer the usual souless magnolia box like rooms stay in a hotel chain. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. My only slight grunble would be that there are no baths, only showers in the rooms.

I enjoyed the stay. Great eveinig meal. Good breakfast. Free parking in the narrowest spaces in the world . As this place has been updated reciently it seemed clean and fresh and will probably appear this way for the coming months. HOWEVER there is a fair amount of grime in the corners of the bathroom, outside of the sink was heavily stained and the extractor fan grill was thick with muck. The type of surface cleaning that has occoured is great if you don't look too close or expect it to be gleeming all over, carry on cutting corners and it won't be so good in a year or so IMO. There was not a shower cap in the bathroom although we were offered one at reception the next day!!!

This hotel is firmly in the category of great website, good lobby/reception area, good breakfast and poor quality rooms. The one key advantage it has is its location for Sheffield University. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, the windows ratlled in the wind and, when I walked around the outside of the building the following morning after having arrived in the dark the previous evening, I saw that many of the window frames looked as though they had not had much done to them for several decades. Yet the owners of this hotel have no qualms in charging, what was in my view, a very high price to stay in a building which is at best, 2nd rate.

Plenty of other hotels in Sheffield which offer superior value/cost.

We were originaly planning to stay in kenwood hall as we love this hotel but it was fully booked so thought we'd give the rutland a try. arrived at the hotel at approximately 4pm + the lasy on reception was friendly + very helpful when we asked about the local area. We were given (a very large!) key + went to find our room- the floorboards were quite creaky. We got there + it was all clean, about a reasonable size. nice decor. we didnt have much of a view but that wasnt a problem for us! we went to the hotel bar which for a 4* hotel is very reasonably priced. The location is great with about a 15 minute walk to west street and the fargate shopping centre area. Being a young couple we like our lie ins so didnt sample breakfast! on the downside on th2nd day when we got back our room hadnt been cleaned even though we left a "please service the room" sign. But when we reported this to reception the receptionist apologised + sent a very friendly gentleman to clean it + even offered us complimentary drinks which we gratefuly accepted. Price wise I think £70 is a little overpriced considering kenwood hall I feel is superior + is roughly £10 cheaper. Would stay again

The welcome and service was very good and the room clean. The location is good. The bathroom was spacious but the room itself very small. The air conditioning unit hung over the bed and was rather unpleasent to look up at as it was bulky and had tissues stuffed between the wall and the unit. The mattress was awful - very cheap with springs that I could feel when I lay down. I had to fold the coverlet in half and put it under the bottom sheet. I wasn't able to leave written feedback as the receptionist informed me that they do not have feedback forms.

Generally a nice hotel with good staff spoilt by a cheap uncomfortable mattress and very small room.

We booked well in advance for the £60 per head dinner dance party . On the night our party of 6 were ushered to a small room with only 2 tables in it . This was away from the main dinner eating and dance area . The atmosphere was poor , the food was good , in fact too much in quantity and there was a lot of waste . The service was rushed and poor . We hadnt finished our sweet course and the table was being cleared ! It was as tho they wanted to get us fed and out .After the meal we were just left . We had to enquire about the disco and what time it started . We were told "it was being held downstairs in the room , but were waiting for the other diners to finish their meal , before it was set up" . This room was also small , the diners in that room stayed at their tables , this meant no room for the people who had eaten in other part of hotel . Very small dance floor , very poor overall . Not worth the money
