On the negative side-
Awful photo above the bed in our room (and in our friends room so not just ours!)
Mould around corners of shower and dirty marks on bathroom wall
Shower head leaking and came on in the middle of the night waking us up!
Cold in the room at night- sheets not big enough
Our room wasn't very well sign posted
disappointing for £90 per night

Positive-
Lovely staff
Great location near university and bus routes into town
Nice lobby area

We upgraded to the executive room which was very clean and spacious and we'll definitely stay there again. The staff were friendly and helpfull, the location was quiet and access to the city centre was organised for us with no problems.

Room Tip: Upgrade if possible.

We stayed in The Rutland Hotel on a Saturday night. The welcome we got on arrival was superb. The receptionists were cheerful and happy to help - nice to be greeted with a smile for a change! The room was great - spacious and clean - and the bed had a memory foam mattress. My only slight criticism was that there were only three pillows and they were really thin. We could have got more from reception but it was only once we were in bed that we discovered this. The bathroom was a wet room and the shower was great - good pressure and temperature. The breakfast was also fantastic. Plenty to choose from at the buffet and the Yorkshire breakfast was of a generous size. We had a super night away in this hotel.

We stayed at the Rutland in November 2010 whilst visiting my daughter who is studying at Sheffield Hallam University.
Loved the rooms, ultra modern with quirky wallpaper frieze above the headboard. The breakfast was very substantial english breakfast, no paper thin bacon here and the breakfast staff were extremely friendly and welcoming.
The only thing we could mark them down on was that the knob was missing on the thermostat on the heating/aircon in our room which meant we could not regulate the heat and it was very noisy through the night, something they must have been aware of.
Other than that, great hotel and would not hesitate to use next time.

We held our wedding at the Rutland in November. I can't fault the staff at the hotel and our guests, a number of who stayed at the hotel, also commented how friendly and helpful the staff are. The food served in the restaurant is delisious with a good menu to chose from. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated in a contemporary style, some reviews mention them being dark so if you preffer the usual souless magnolia box like rooms stay in a hotel chain. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. My only slight grunble would be that there are no baths, only showers in the rooms.

I enjoyed the stay. Great eveinig meal. Good breakfast. Free parking in the narrowest spaces in the world . As this place has been updated reciently it seemed clean and fresh and will probably appear this way for the coming months. HOWEVER there is a fair amount of grime in the corners of the bathroom, outside of the sink was heavily stained and the extractor fan grill was thick with muck. The type of surface cleaning that has occoured is great if you don't look too close or expect it to be gleeming all over, carry on cutting corners and it won't be so good in a year or so IMO. There was not a shower cap in the bathroom although we were offered one at reception the next day!!!

This hotel is firmly in the category of great website, good lobby/reception area, good breakfast and poor quality rooms. The one key advantage it has is its location for Sheffield University. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, the windows ratlled in the wind and, when I walked around the outside of the building the following morning after having arrived in the dark the previous evening, I saw that many of the window frames looked as though they had not had much done to them for several decades. Yet the owners of this hotel have no qualms in charging, what was in my view, a very high price to stay in a building which is at best, 2nd rate.

Plenty of other hotels in Sheffield which offer superior value/cost.
