As Christmas is just around the corner (!) it brings to mind that I must warn people about the terrible experience we had with this hotel on Christmas Day last year.

My family and I were really looking forward to our Christmas Day lunch here and we had paid in full a full month in advance. We had held our wedding reception here exactly 25 years ago so we had a soft spot for this place.

How wrong can you be? Things started well when we arrived but quickly went downhill. Won't bore everyone here with the full details but basically they ran out of food and we ended up with meat and carrots only for our Christmas dinner!!!!! Management refused to speak to us on the day and told us to "put it in writing".

Despite "putting it in writing" half a dozen times the manager of the hotel completely ignored me. Not being one to go down without a fight the upshot of this was that I ended up taking the hotel to court and winning our case. Still the manager of this hotel felt it was still ok to ignore me. Wrong again! On the day that I was about to send in the bailiffs, Best Western instructed the hotel manager to settle with me - which he grudgingly did - eventually!

So, if you are thinking of spending your hard earned cash and treating your family with a nice family christmas dinner, you would be well advised to take your custom elsewhere, where your custom will be appreciated and you won't be treated so rudely by staff and management who quite clearly wouldn't recognise good customer service if it hit them in the face.

Check in simple and quick and found that I'd already been upgraded to one of the larger rooms which was a really good size. The only problem with the room was that in the bathroom there was a swarm (yes really) of flies. I opened the window to let as many as possible escape then killed the rest with the thoughtfully provided face flannel as a swatter. I called reception to complain about the flies and they sent a man round to clean up the fly corpses. He did a very good and quick job of the clean up and then sanitised the whole bathroom and changed all the towels and toiletries. If their housekeeping hadn't been lazy in the first place I suspect this problem would not have occurred.

Room quiet with nice large desk to work at but wi-fi not very fast and would not let me VPN into my company network (a common hotel problem).

Bar area ok but would benefit from having a large TV so guests can watch sports etc.

Food alright but the chips they serve are the size jenga pieces. Why do they do this?

Stayed here as we were visiting friends in the area for about a week. We specifically booked a particular room and received email confirmation that the room would be ours. When we arrived the Hotel was in the middle of a wedding and when I showed them the confirmation of the booking which contained the room number we discovered that the room had been given to someone else. No sincere apology given just a pitiful excuse that someone hadn't done their job correctly.

Quite sad and very irritating the staff didn't really seem to care. Had a visit from the housekeeper the next day and she did try to sooth ruffled feathers. We stayed most of the time with friends so cannot comment on meals, etc.

Stayed here for one night @£56 the room was a good size the bar food was good sandwich was £4 & well worth £4 in the evening we we're going to eat jn the restaurant but decided to chill on big sofas had a great burger for £9 can't fault the food the other meal we're also good. We didn't have breakfast included. When asking the price we were a bit surprised it was £12.95 I didn't see what you got for the price but would have to have been amazing for that price so we went somewhere else for breakfast shame but for 3 of use that would have been nearly £40. There was a rip in the bed sheet but that's all I can say was wrong. Would defiantly stay again.

I stay here quite a lot for work the staff are friendly and the rooms very clean and comfortable. Much of the food is locally produced and well cooked, especially the home-made bread. The older part of the hotel was home to Mary Boleyn, of the 'Other Boleyn Girl' fame this has been added to with new extensions providing a modern and relaxing bar. The hotel is situated a fair way out of Sheffield making it nice and quite but if you want to go into town for the night-life you will need to get a taxi.

We stayed at the hotel last week as we decided to treat ourselves to a night away. We were heading to the are sheffield arena to watch Michael Buble. We don't live to far away so it was a nice treat.
We checked in at 2pm, and spent the afternoon in the bar which was lovely. What made it even more special was the staff changed the bar music to Michael Buble which we thought was such a lovely touch.
The hotel offered a taxi service to the arena that was included in the price of our room. We paid £99 and we had a great room, the transport to the arena and back, plus breakfast for both of us.
The receptionist offered us sandwiches when we arrived back at 11.45pm and breakfast was fantastic with the staff asking how our night was when we came down in the morning. We really enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back.

This is a very good looking hotel on the S of Sheffield. You should be aware that it is a popular weddingt venue, which is the source ofr many of the complaints in other revues. Make sure that you ask for a room overlooking the car park, which are quieter. You may have to contend with other guests who don't know how to behave in public hotels, but generally when I stay here, it is quiet and satisfactory. I have not eaten here, and might suggest somewhere else.
The "new block" is mainly quite alrge motel type rooms, which are just thjat. The "character rooms" in the main block sometimes have squeaky floor boards, uncertain plumbing and noisy rooks in the trees at the front. These rooms are quaint but can be noisy.
The only complaint I might have is that the duvet was very thick, and therefore very hot. A thinner one would have been better.
This hotel has improved greatly, and I have always had good service from them.
