“Brasserie lets it down”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

We stayed here for one night " Romantic Break " the room was lovely and the service was good.
Remembering how this hotel used to be with it's restaurant and the gourmet food I was expecting the same but all that has changed now.
A new brasserie has been added since the last time we visited and to be honest it wasn't very inviting. It is stark and cold looking and there's a kind of open upstairs seating to it.
We chose to sit down stairs as my husband has trouble with the steps so we sat and waited and waited and although the staff saw us sat there no one made any effort to come to our table.
In the end my husband went upstairs to the bar to make some sort of contact with the staff.
We got the impression that the staff would rather you sit upstairs where the bar is so they don't have to keep running up and down the stairs.
Having said all that the food was good and tasty and having seen some of the tapas coming out to the tables it looked quite good.
Next morning for breakfast it was a bit like a workers canteen, oh I wish they had never got rid of their lovely restaurant. In total the food is good and staying at the hotel was good but that uninviting " canteen " spoils it. What a let down to a beautiful hotel.

The entrance was not inviting. There was a small crowd of loud, drinking , smoking young men using bad language. The interior is not welcoming but we persevered and arrived at the Brasserie, again not particularly welcoming decor. However the service was perfectly adequate and the food surprisingly good. I particularly enjoyed the dressed crab and the subtle flavours of the beetroot and feta salad.

Well positioned, close to motorways and all Sheffield amenities. Perfect for me visiting friends and family. Staff always friendly. Have stayed here a few times now and would certainly recommend it to family and friends.

Executive double (room 15) was large and airy, one of the rooms above the bar/bistro with a nice big bay window.
Breakfast was very good, food in general is really good. All staff seemed very friendly.
Two slight niggles - I ordered a child's meal in the bistro and asked for it to be brought up to our room, I was very surprised to then see 3 quid added to the bill for 'room service' as the original meal was only a fiver and it took only seconds to walk it up a flight of stairs (they would have had to walk it to our table anyway). I didn't think there was any need to do this considering we were paying guests, not very customer centric! There was a bit of noise from the downstairs bar into the small hours one night which was noticeable.
However, if we were in the area again we would definitely stay at the Staindrop again.

Pop to this hotel for a quiet drink or a nice meal once or twice a week and find the staff friendly. Good place to call with friends if you want to enjoy a few hours out and be able talk in a nice environment . Also been to three weddings and found them well organised and staff friendly.

The title of my review says it all really. This is a consistently good venue. I have also attended a wedding here and while it would not be my choice to marry in a hotel - the bar and function room were great and the wedding was very well organised. The rooms are contemporary and clean with everything you need to enjoy a restful nights sleep away from busy roads.

Had my birthday party here in the Chambers Suite. From the outset, staff were very helpful and friendly. The function room was clean and, thankfully, air conditioned. The events organiser helped with my options on catering and the food was delicious. I specifically asked for veggie food to be separated and marked up, and it was. Room rates for party goers were favourable, and my guests said the rooms were really good. We had a disco, run by Liam, which was fantastic! He does not work for the hotel, but they will put you in touch with him. I can't praise him enough. Everything went smoothly and the whole team at Staindrop were great. Drinks are a little on the pricey side, but I would definitely recommend this for a function.
