We arrived to the hotel for a two night stay but they did not have the Booking.com reservation that I had made. I showed them the printout but they just said sorry, we didn't get it. No attempt was made to find out what had happened, they didn't attempt to contact booking.com. We also had a 1 night booking with Expedia which we had cancelled because we had a change in numbers. They had not rented out that room and they also had one more disabled access room with nice beds and OK bathrooms. But they had no rooms the next night and we had to move out. They did not help us to find a room elsewhere. The booking.com reservation rate was better than the expedia rate but she said she really should charge us a higher rate as since we didn't have a reservation, we should be charged the rack rate. Eventually she relented and gave us a better rate for the two rooms. The rooms were very nice and the hotel is in a lovely setting just on the outskirts of Sheffield. We had dinner there the night we stayed. The serving staff were far more friendly and professional then the hotel staff. The food was lovely and we were made to feel very welcome. I just wish they could get the same calibre of people working in the hotel side! We go to Sheffield on a regular basis and I would love to use the hotel again but would hope that they make some changes before we go back.

I have been here once before for afternoon tea which is in a league of its own, but having just retired I went again with my husband and the staff from work. They had then booked dinner and a luxury room for the my husband and me and it was wonderful. The rooms are delightful with 2 easy chairs, a very comfortable bed, a lovely view, a desk and all you could ever want in a bathroom, from cotton buds to luxurious towels. The staff were friendly, the dinner was scrumptious and the breakfast was served, not a buffet. All beautifully presented and not just overladen plates.
We really could not fault the place and wish we could have stayed longer, but will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake and if bad on your legs, a downstairs room, though there is a lift.

Stayed here on business many times and it's about time that I sent a review.
The hotel and staff are great.

Breakfast is freshly prepared and of very high quality.

Dinner is a real treat with excellent service.

The rooms are very nice and even the new extension houses very nice, contemporary style rooms which are in keeping with the main hotel.

Thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Unfortunately I only stayed for one night at this delightful hotel but it was absolutely gorgeous and my partner and I are already thinking about when we might go again! The exterior of the hotel is beautifully magnificent and as you enter the hall it's like stepping back in time. An imposing staircase swept up towards a large, ornate window before dividing off into two hallways leading to the bedrooms. Also leading from the Reception area is the Priest's Hole bar which is cosy and quaint, with little nooks and 'secret' places to sit.
Our room was beautiful and in-keeping with the period of the hotel, both in the furnishings and ornaments and even down to the wallpaper. We were overlooking the bright little courtyard and could also see the small lake below. The only slight negative was that some areas of the bathroom could do with a little attention. The paint on some of the woodwork just needs touching up where it is beginning to flake and the area around the shower screen and some of the tiles, needs cleaning up. However, this did not detract at all from the lovely time we had.
The staff couldn't have been friendlier, even lending us a history book about Whitley Hall, which we looked through as we sipped ice cold drinks in the evening sunshine beneath the canopy beside the lake. We then had a stroll around the beautiful grounds and came across a pea-hen sitting on her nest of eggs. After a meal at a local pub we returned and slept perfectly in the wonderfully comfortable bed.
The following morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast served on piping hot plates in the elegant dining room. Breakfast was accompanied by soft, classical music which was lovely as it helped create a welcoming atmosphere where people could chat without feeling uncomfortable.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to stay again soon.
