The hotel is in a quiet rural location set in lovely grounds just 10 mins from the M1. The location is ideal for visiting the 'Dark Peaks' but you have to go via the busy Hillsborough area of Sheffield to get to the 'White Peaks'.
Stayed over half term on a 3 day mini Gourmet break at the end of October 2013, different from a Romantic break, reviewed elsewhere, in that you get a bottle of wine with your evening meal instead of a bottle of pink fizz on arrival.
We arrived at 14:00 hrs and were told that the room would not be ready until 15:00, as others have reported.
We stayed in Room 8, in the older part of the Hall, overlooking the duck pond/lake. The rooms was lovely, if not a little small for the amount of furniture that was in the room but this was only a small thing as the rest of the room and the bathroom made up for it. Really comfy bed and just everything else you could need. The hotel has extensive free WiFi but the mobile reception is poor.
We were on BBEM so ate in the dining room each night. The menu is a little short and we struggled to find something different on the third night. The restaurant has two AA rosettes and the meals we were served certainly justified this, with quality, style and flavour. It is 'Masterchef' style so be prepared if this is not your bag. There is a huge selection of wine, if a little expensive. The breakfast was also very good.
The hotel staff exemplify Yorkshire hospitality. They were always friendly, helpful and keen to please without being overbearing.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

Room Tip: Room 8 was good.

I stayed here for two nights recently whilst visiting friends who live fairly close by. The accommodation was fine, although I'm not a huge fan of old properties and their so-called "character" (i.e. draughty windows and creaky, sloping floors). Breakfast was good. Throughout my stay I was irritated by what seemed to be the standard response to almost any request: 'no problem' or 'it's not a problem'. If you're running a hotel then I wouldn't anticipate that pouring a cup of coffee for a guest would be a problem!
My main complaint relates to dinner in the restaurant. I had booked a table for two for 7.30 pm. We were having a drink in the lounge beforehand, and there may have been some confusion over the possibility of another joining us (that was my fault), but we were not shown to our table until 8.45 pm, despite querying the delay on 2 or 3 occasions and being fobbed-off with "just a few more minutes"-type excuses.
My starter was fine, but my guest described her terrine as 'tasteless'. We both had fish main courses. She had specifically asked for her salmon to be undercooked. It was overcooked, as was my hake, although I did not complain about mine. The waiter apologized and another salmon was produced which was closer to what had been requested. In each case the fish was served atop a small bed of vegetables ( baby leeks were predominant): these were fine, but the vegetables served separately were overcooked. The wine-list mark-ups seemed high. All-in-all a disappointing dinner.

We turned up and there was a wedding going on. It was very busy and crowded. Got to the desk and the check in was delayed because the receptionist was on a call (seemed unimportant). Got to the room which was absolutely superb. Lovely cozy room and good bathroom and shower. Only issue in the room was the TV screen was zoomed into the picture and couldn't be changed. The evening meal was nice and enjoyable but we did have to wait quite a while after our booking time. In the morning, we were directed to the breakfast room and got seated. The wedding party were also eating. The cooked breakfast was a buffet (or so we assumed), so we got up and got some. However the waitress came over and asked us why we ate from the wedding breakfast when we should have ordered. Well it made us feel really uncomfortable and annoyed really. We were not told this and it was very unclear. Disappointingly the food being served was better than the buffet, no offer to swap it though. Despite all these issues we had a good stay and after filling in a review card, the manager called us to apologise. That call moved the star rating up from a 3 as I did not expect it. Would consider going again because I feel it was an off day because of the wedding.

We got married here so obviously have a bit of a connection, but we came for a 2 night break away from it all (very little phone reception so its a great escape :) )
Fantastic meals each night, great room.
Only criticism was the door was a little thin and let a bit of noise through, not problematical but a few extra quid when replacing doors wouldn't go amiss!!

Room Tip: new wing has the better rooms, older has more character. I dont think i would stay of there were functions on though as most rooms are near to the two function rooms, so you would get some noise.

My husband arranged the 'romantic break offer' for our first wedding anniversary. He upgraded the package to a luxury room.
We arrived at 2:45 to be told we would have to wait 15 minutes because we had not paid for a early check in! (Would it have really made a difference to ask for our name and see if our room was ready?)
The rooms was lovely, set it a separate courtyard away from the busy corridors, although you could only get to it from the outside.
We were very happy with the room. Comfy large bed, separate shower and large bath.
The food was out of the world. We had a three course meal in the evening, although there wasn't lots of choice, I'm sure there was something for everyone the quality and flavours in everything was fantastic. The breakfast was also as good.
