We were looking for a hotel outside Sheffield on our way from Scotland to Surrey and planning to visit Chatsworth the following day. The hotel is tucked away in the countryside and hidden at the bottom of a quiet lane. There is a modern wing and the original building. There is a lake outside the modern wing and a peacock strutting about the place! The traditional, original building is very charming with lots of dark wood and log fires. The modern wing is more functional but the rooms are a good size and are well presented. You need to keep your key on you as you have to use the keyring to pass over a reader to gain entry to certain areas. We had three rooms - one for my wife and I with a kingsize bed and two twin rooms for our four children (ages from 8 to 14). Two rooms faced the rear and looked over the lake and one looked out over the car park. The one with the car park view was on the ground floor and the only drawback was people walking by could see in! My children quickly found out they were more comfortable closing the curtains. We had dinner at the hotel as we were taking advantage of their 'romantic break' offer of dinner, bed and breakfast for £110 per room. The food was to a very good standard. We all had the same starter of grilled asparagus on a rocket and parmesan salad with a fried egg on top - it was delicious. Four of us had steak and it was perfectly cooked. Two had a chicken dish which was also good. We ordered a good bottle of wine and unusually this was just left open on the table for our arrival - there was no chance to taste it before accepting it. The puddings were also good. The following morning we had breakfast. We all thought it was one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had in the UK. The food was good but the way it was served was excellent. Tea and coffee was on the table in minutes of us sitting down - without us ordering it. There was a buffet for all cereals, fruit juice and pastries and also for the cooked breakfast. A server helped you to the cooked food which was constantly being replenished (and you could go up for seconds). Some hotel breakfasts can take longer than dinner and this is annoying if you are planning an early start or have to go on somewhere. The way it was done at Whitley Hall was superb. We would recommend Whitley Hall Hotel.
